The English people, though their bloods are mingled by the invasion of other people like the Celt, Roman, Dane and Viking, are inheritors of the aggressive and moderate Anglo-saxon who can survive in the harsh sailing to the Britain Island, their last Labensraum. And they established the orderly system called Comitatus and were converted to Christianity by St. Augustine in the 6th century. And then they could wield the power as craftsmen under the fence of Middle-Aged Guild. With the rise of Renaissance, they defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588 and suddenly emerged as the powerful empire as well as the strong nation under the Christian Humanism.
Meanwhile, their rationality developed the constitutional monarchy, the representative democracy, science and industry. Furthermore, the capital accumulated by the colonial domination enabled the bourgeois to keep the English tradition characterized by puritanism which valued morality, education and moderation. However, since Darwin’s the Origin of Species, the Great Britain’s spiritual crisis led to its declining, giving its global domination over to America. Recently, the Great Britain seems to attempt to take back its past position through Brexit, which indicates the hope to restore its glorious tradition by declaring its difference from the European Continental countries.
This paper is based on the concept that the English people are the inheritors of the moderate and aggressive Anglo-Saxon who had such characteristics as christian humanism. The English people still have the spiritual quality which discerns their merits and demerits and have the open mind which allows them to unhesitatingly import and accept the things to improve themselves. Furthermore, due to their neutral disposition, they furnished the political, economical and cultural circumstances with harmony, which enabled the puritan middle class to sustain the English society as sound and safe although their power around the globe has shrunk since the world war I and II and amid the decaying of the Christian faith.
In brief, we can reconfirm through re-reading the English poetry that the English people have created the real literature in neutral tones rather than the surrealistic or dramatic one in loud tones,
