Zainichi Korean writer Kim Seok-beom(1925-) wrote “In a journal around 1949 – A passage from 「Mountain of Death」” in 『Joseon Criticism』(1951.12.) under the nickname of ‘Park Tong’, and he debuted in Japanese literature. Kim Seok-beom grew up in a Zainichi Korean society in Ikaino, Osaka, where Korean was his native language. As a bilingual writer, he studied Japanese at Tsuruhashi 2nd primary education school, an Osaka municipal school. Kim Seok-beom, who debuted in 1951, has written Japanese novels such as 「Gansu Park Seobang」(Munyesudo, 1957.8.), 「Death of a Crow」(Munyesudo, 1957.12.), 「Poop and Freedom」(Munyesudo, April 1960), and 「Kwandukjung」(Culture Criticism, May 1962). As early as the 1970s, he began to explore his literary language and the linguistic theory of novel creation with the question ‘Why write in Japanese’. Kim Seok-beom, who still writes novels in Japanese today, published four Korean novels written during the 1960s when he was active in the Korean Association of Korean Residents in Japan.
Early in the 1960s, he published several short stories, including 「Pheasant Hunt」(Josunsinbo, 1961), 「Honbaek(Soul)」(Literary Arts, 1962), and 「At a Pier」(Literary Arts, 1964). In May 1965 to June 1967, he published 『Hwansando』, an unfinished serialized novel. Following the end of 『Hwansando』, Kim Seok-beom stops writing Korean novels and writes Japanese novels instead. Meanwhile, research on Kim Seok-beom literature has focused on Japanese novels and works translated into Korean. Kim Seok-beom's Korean language usage and literary worldview in his Korean novels, however, are the main subjects of study.
An analysis of the author's method of characterization and dialogue in the novel, 「At a Pier」, has been conducted. This novel was published before the serialization of Kim Seok-beom's first Korean novel, 「Pheasant Hunt」. The novel 「Pheasant Hunt」 is set in Jeju Island in the late 1950s when the ban on going out of Mt. Halla was lifted. A Korean interpreter named Ryang and an American officer named Caera are the main characters in this novel. The brutality and cunning of an American officer who shot and killed the Jeju people who entered Hallasan is contrasted with ‘lyang’, who appears as a reflective person. This American officer represents the United States, the imperialist power that led the Cold War system on the Korean Peninsula.
In 「At a Pier」, the story is set in a small port city near Shimonoseki, where Sunyok, a major figure associated with Chochongryun, meets sailors from South Korea. It takes place in South Korea in 1964, during protests against the Korea-Japan negotiations. Using the character of ‘Chief of Sailors’, the author portrays the reality of state-led economic development in the 1960s. Moreover, the language spoken by a ‘Joseon Grandmother’ belonging to the Korean Residents' Association in Japan to Cho Chongryon and the Chief of Sailors from South Korea is a mixed regional language (Chungcheong-do and Pyeongan-do).
It expresses Kim Seok-beom's ideological conflict with the Korean Residents in Japan, who were members of Chochongryon at the time. It is also the character's expression of literary imagination aimed at transcending the Korean Peninsula's division and becoming a unified independent nation.
Writing in Korean in Chochongryun, which follows North Korean ideology, was therefore written as a political ‘constraint’. It reinforces the dogmatic ideology of a divided Korean peninsula based on a Cold War imperialist system after liberation. 「Pheasant Hunt」 contains anti-American ideology that targets the U.S. military government that consolidated the division of Joseon, connecting it to the author's consciousness inherent in Kim Seok-beom's 1950s Japanese novels. In 「At a Pier」, the author expresses an independent worldview that pursues a ‘new alternative modernity’ which differs from North Kor...
