탈식민체제로서의 우리식 사회주의의 식민성 = The Coloniality of Socialism of Our Style as a Post-Colonial Regime Focusing on the Revolution Era of Sukarno and Ne Win

The control of the Western culture, implemented by Sukarno and Ne Win, showed a kind of xenophobia, namely cultural chauvinism. In this process the key concepts such as negara kekelurgaan(family state), gotong royong(mutual cooperation), musyawarah mufakat(deliberation and consensus) were emphasized by Indonesian socialism. In reality thsese traditional values were linked to illiberal paternalism. Even if there was no symbol-mongering as much as in Sukarno era, the arbitrary taking of life, confiscation of property, and absolute ownership of resources by Newin`s Burmese way to socialism were a traditional heritage from the Burmese kings. While calling the traditional values by these ways, Sukarno and Ne Win clinged to nation state building regarded as one of Western modernities. In this process, different political voices, including political liberalism and ethnic separatism, were repressed and marginalized. Before the western colonization, Indonesia and Burma had never experienced the nation state as an imagined community based on unity in diversity. It was great paradox for them to commit themselves to buiding the nation state, produced in the West, while campaigning against the Western influences in terms of anti-colonialism. In this context, it can be said that the socialist regimes of our style, represented as Indonesian socialism and Burmese way to socialism, show ‘dependent continuity` composed of a sort of fusion of traditionality and modernity, and national revolution replacing external colonialism with internal colonialism.
