Bongsu was a military communication system in which predetermined signals were sent out using torches and smoke from designated facilities to convey important information on the borders of the country to the central government. Bongsudaes (beacon-fire stations) where bongsu, a beacon-fire signal system, was implemented were themselves small military fortifications. In the early Joseon Dynasty, bongsudaes were also a refuge for the people living in their vicinity in the event of an emergency. However, research on Bongsu so far has focused on the signaling systems. As such, research on protection facilities and weapons systems related to bongsu-related fortifications seems to be needed.
In this study, the weapons systems were analyzed by classifying them into armor, firearms, archery, spears and swords, and other weapons. Armor included eomdu (掩頭), eomsim (掩心), jieomdu (紙俺 頭), jigapeui (紙甲衣), jigapju (紙甲冑), and cheolgapju (鐵甲冑; iron armor). Armor and helmets made of Korean paper were mainly supplied to soldiers. Iron armor, which was found only at Wicheon Bongsudae, was likely to be cheolchalgap (鐵札甲; iron scale armor), as pieces of scale armor were excavated during a status survey. The five pieces of eomdu and eomsim found at Eungbong Bongsudae were the helmets and armor of five bongsuguns (beacon-fire military soldiers). Each piece of eomdu and eomsim found in another bongsudae seems to be the helmet and armor for byeoljangs (別將) or ojangs (伍長), who were superiors in the military unit.
Firearms included chochong (鳥銃), seungjachong (勝字銃), and samhyeolchong (三穴銃). By comparing the quantity of lead bullets allocated to one chochong, it seems that the firearms were a real combat weapon, but the number of bullets allocated would have lowered its effectiveness. Seungjachong and samhyeolchong seems to have been used for signaling rather than as actual weapons.
Archery equipment included heukgagung (黑角弓), gyojagung (校子 弓), jangjeon (長箭), pyeonjeon (片箭), tong-a (筒兒), hwajeon (火箭), danghwajeon (唐火箭), and daejeon (大箭), gunghyeon (弓弦), gung-ga (弓家), and pyeonjeonchok (片箭鏃). It can be divided largely into bows and arrows. Considering the number of arrows per bow, it was found that the number was quite low considering the number of bows. This shows that military facilities and equipment were becoming poor as the military finances deteriorated at that time. Hwajeon and danghwajeon, which were flaming arrows using gunpowder, are considered to have been used for signaling to report an emergency, similarly to samhyeolchong.
In addition, neungcheol (菱鐵) and pyeon-gon (鞭棍) were special weapons. Neungcheol was equipped at Seongsan Bongsudae, and pyeon-gon was at Dolsando Bongsudae. Neungcheol was one of the defensive weapons, and placing several neungcheol around a bongsu made it difficult for enemies to invade. On the other hand, pyeon-gon was one of the offensive weapons. The furnishing of such pyeon-gon at bongsudaes can be considered an active supply of weapons to protect the bongsu.
Despite the functional difference between the frontier and inland bongsus, the status of the weapons provided was similar. In particular, the iron armor of Wicheon Bongsudae and the two heukgakgung of Burosan Bongsudae, in the inland, indicate that they were equipped with weapons superior to the bongsudaes on the periphery. It can be seen that the defense of bongsu in the inland was as actively prepared as that in the periphery.
A comparison of weapons stocked at bongsudaes identified problems with the effectiveness and operation of the weapons systems. Such pro...
