The purpose of this study is to embody the structures and the strategies of small group conversations in the Speaking·Listening classes in an elementary school. The conversations between students are very important aspects of classroom communication. Because the experiences of the peer communication of problem solving process are deeply related with actual speaking and listening ability. Therefore, the interaction between students must be revealed in depth.
In order to get data of real conversation for this study, the researcher participated in three Speaking·Listening classes of 5 and 6 grade students. Also, the researcher observed small group conversation process in the classroom. The conversation contents were transcribed and then analysed in order to clarify qualities of small group conversation.
In small group conversation, the objective is to find the best for a task and to be evaluated by the teacher of the Speaking·Listening teaching and learning process. This goal of small group conversation reflects the influence of a teacher, the studying task, and physical/psychological environment of the classroom. Also, the consciousness of the concrete goal makes the situation of conversation dynamic with participants of small group conversation cooperative and sometimes creating positive conflicts.
Small group conversation in Speaking·Listening classes has a series of functional phases in order to accomplish the goal of conversation. In this study, the functional phase of small group conversation is analyzed with Start Phase, Search Phase, Arrangement Phase, and Preparation of Publication Phase. The functions of Start Phase are to share information about the topic which participants have to discuss and to check where they are ready for small group conversation.
Search Phase is the longest and most complicated. In this phase, the conversation participants utilized the multi-branch methods which proposed to discuss the subject and exchange opinions or reactions about good solutions. Arrangement Phase is to decide the best among multi-branch solutions presented in the prior phase. In Arrangement Phase, the contents are arranged for participants to get ready to inform the whole class in Preparation of Publication Phase.
The structure of move sequence is the minimal structure of conversation to attain the objective of the conversation. In this study, the structure of move sequence of small group conversation in Speaking·Listening class is examined. For effective processing conversation, the utterances need to continue in the move sequence, 'initiation(I) - response(R) -agreement(A)'. If there is no initiation-utterance as the First Move, start of conversation is impossible. If conversation is not started, students have no interests or difficulty of participation in the studying task. Also, when the students do not accomplish the Second Move, which is an appropriate reaction for the initiative utterances, the teacher has to foster confidence of Conversation participation and teach the effective expression method. For the 3th Conversation movement, the students should learn to express agreement and disagreement with consideration of the relationship between classmates and be able to join a conversation.
The participant roles of small group conversation are distributed with the leader, the responser, the appraiser, the progresser, and the visitor. The relationship structure of the participant role in the small group conversation is characterized by openness and duplication. The quality of the specific participant relationship structure is very useful for the participant to experience the various roles of conversation. The negative aspect of the small group conversation remains with only the visitor, with limited participation.
The types of structure of turn-taking that appear in small group conversation, are Exchange Conversation, Order Conversation, Circular Conversation and Envelopment Conversation. There are two characteristics of structure of turn-taking that appear in small group conversation. Order Conversation, the Circular Conversation and the Envelopment Conversation are often shown, and the current speaker points out the next person in the turn-taking. These characteristics of structure of turn-taking appearing in the small group conversation are originated by the instructional intention.
The interaction of the small group conversation becomes cooperative, competitive, and complementary by the adjustment of confliction interests in the structure of relationship among the participants. Continuous interaction of small group conversation demands foundation of inter-subjectivity, which is based on accountability. The inter-subjectivity can be obtained and created by interaction, the process of finding a common ground. From this process, the participant of the conversation can experience negotiating and solving discord with other students.
The leader of the small group conversation, the responser and the appraiser compose the structure of move sequence and use the various strategies of agreement induction for utterance. Some examples of agreement induction strategies are reasonable judgement requesting, simple requesting, flattering, constructing, emphasizing of altruism, and using other persons. The progressor of the small group conversation uses the strategy of conversation participation induction and the strategy of making decision induction. The strategy of participation induction is utilized with questioning, demanding of utterance and restraining from one-sided utterance. As the strategy of making decision induction is utilized in making decision by the majority and the opinion compounding.
In conclusion, the analysis results of the small group conversation provide information about the actual condition of language use of the students. At the same time, It suggests a plan of teaching and learning and concrete teaching method, aspect of the interaction for the spontaneous and integrative oral language, which is different from the use of word language. The interaction among the students must be activated to improve the substantial Speaking·Listening ability in the teaching and learning of Speaking·Listening Class. More importantly, the qualities of the communication between students must be revealed more concretely.
