This study intends to look into the present status of the Joseon period’s Royal seals that 320 of them remain until now as well as consider their patterns and correct the chronicle or character known wrongly.
The Royal seals refer to the king or queen’s seals of which carved word ends with ‘bo(寶)’ or ‘sae(璽)’ and which were manufactured by the state. In China, they thought ‘bo’ or ‘sae’ was only for the Emperor, so they carved the character, ‘in(印)’ on the seal and granted it to Joseon which was its feudal state. However, in Joseon, they used ‘in’ only in the toadyish relationship with China, and they used ‘bo’ within the country and in the diplomacy with other countries in the good-neighbor relationship.
The seals were started from the Chinese Royal seals. And as they were being continuously developed, they were transmitted into neighboring countries such as Korea or Japan, and some of them were sent from China while others were manufactured on its own; in particular, they became one of the most important items in the diplomacy that they greatly contributed to forming a cultural area.
The Royal seals need be looked at as artistic handicrafts, not just from the view of the seal carving history since they not just have simple functional aspects but have artistic value from the knobs with the shape of various animals or the carvings on their side; however, the studies on this are still insufficient.
Although the history of the Royal seals seems long as records say that the king used them from the Buyeo or Three States’ period, no Royal seals before the Goryeo period exist now. Thus, it is hard to consider the Royal seals before the Goryeo period. However, in Joseon, our last dynasty, they managed the Royal seals carefully that quite a lot of them, 320 can remain until now.
The Royal seals in the Joseon period can be largely divided by two characters. One of them was succeeded to the next king as they were manufactured for the purpose of public affairs in the inside and outside while the other of them was for an individual, which were manufactured in the ceremonies like an installation or entitlement and were enshrined after his death. There were tens of the Royal seal’s kinds which were used for the public affairs, but only some of them exist now while the Royal seals manufactured in the ceremonies take up most of the Royal seals that remain now; in fact, the Royal seals manufactured over the whole period of Joseon from the initial period till Japanese colonial period remain until now. They were managed by Jongmyo(the shrine of the Royal family) with Jade Book, Bamboo Book, or Gyomyeong(document for an installation) accordingly manufactured in various ceremonies even after the death of the character, so his position and fame that he had when he was alive could be maintained.
Once the king’s will to make the Royal seal was delivered to a proper government office, the Royal family member or a professional library official appointed as an incumbent bureaucrat wrote the seal word in the writing of seal characters, and a drawing personnel drew a pattern with the shape of the Royal seal, and based on that, professional craftsmen from various fields shared the tasks of seal engraving, sculpturing, and metallurgy or a craftsman of a certain filed manufactured it alone. The Royal seal manufactured in this way was granted to the character when a glorious feast was held and civil and military officials gathered.
The Royal seals kept in Jongmyo were at stake as the capital was taken over by Japanese aggression at Imjinwaeran, but as King Seonjo escaped from the disturbance, it was moved along, and passing by Pyeongyang and Yeongbyeun, it was able to be safely enshrined at Jongmyo again. However, in the period of the Injo’s reign, 1623~1649, while the capital was subsided and the Royal seals was carelessly managed whenever accidents happened such as Lee, Gwal’s Nan(disturbance) and Byeongjahoran, some of the Royal seals manufactured in the former period of Joseon were lost. After that, in the period of the Sukjong’s reign, 1674~1720, they worked for replacing the Royal seals and their belongings which were lost during the previous disturbances that it was possible to preserve them well by the time of the Japanese colonial period. However, during the time around the Independence in August 15th of 1945 and the Korean War from 1950 to1953, the Royal palace and Jongmyo became vacant and refugees flowed in that tens of Royal seals were robbed and the situation has been continued up to now.
The Royal seals divided into Geumbo(金寶), Okbo(玉寶), Okin(玉印), and Eunin(銀印) by the material quality and carved word, and Okbo was manufactured for the king and Queen who were alive, Geumbo for the dead, and Okin and Eunin mainly for the Crown Prince and Princess. Geumbo was mostly cast using copper or silver and then plated, and in the period of Japanese occupancy, it was generally cast using gold and then plated. Okbo or Okin was manufactured using Namyangok(the jade of Namyang) produced in Namyangbu of Gyeonggi-do, and Okin was cast using silver and then plated with silver.
The shapes of them can be categorized into three, the dragon(Yongnyu(龍·)), turtle(Guinyu(龜·)), and rode(Jiknyu(直·)). The dragon shaped Royal seals were manufactured before the Sejong period, the initial period of Joseon but were not manufactured after that; however, they started to be manufactured again around the period of Japanese occupancy, so they formed the mainstream of the Royal seals in that period. The turtle shaped Royal seals were manufactured over the whole period of the Joseon dynasty, and the rode shaped ones preserved are three kinds, and all of which are from the former period of Joseon and are commonly granted to the Crown Princess.
The Royal seals of Yongnyu and Jiknyu that exist now are only the ones manufactured in specific periods, so it is impossible to arrange the patterns of them by periods, but the ones of Guinyu that exist now are the ones manufactured over the whole period of Joseon, so the patterns of them can be examined. In the former period of Joseon that corresponds to the time before Imjinwaeran in 1592, turtles were described realistically without decoration and had a tail divided into three characteristically. In the mean time, after the end of Imjinwaeran, various shapes of Guinyu were manufactured, and after the Sukjong’s period, its decoration became increased, and the turtle which was realistic and plain at first changed to be expressed to be similar to a dragon head as flaring eyes, big nose, canine tooth, and manes were carved on them. The turtle tail stretched out was not carved any more and was attached to the body, and the lotus leaf pattern started to appear in its shell, but these kinds of characteristics tended to be schematized as it got nearer to the latter period. In the Japanese colonial period, the turtle head was raised high up to the sky, and the whole size got bigger. As seen from the Royal seals of Yongnyu manufactured in the period of Japanese occupancy, the dragons were expressed lively as their eyes were glaring and their backs were bent in the Gojong’s period while in the Sunjong’s period, they had a plain back and a broad face and an abnormally big nose that they look somewhat ridiculous and have a tendency of schematization; thus, it can be seen that the situation that the national fortunes faded away has a relation with the artistic expression. Although the basic form and the carved word of the Joseon period’s Royal seals followed the Chinese ones, their general forms differ with each other; thus, it is thought that Koreans did not follow China unconditionally but found their own way to make the form.
Although there are abundant data on the Joseon period’s Royal seals, the ones that were kept at Jongmyo but lost in the 20th century have not been studied at all, and there were no trials to approach them in the art-historical view due to the obscure thought that they are the series of seals having the same continued shape, so there aroused many mistakes of the chronicle or character incorrectly known to people.
Since this study corrected basic errors on the data of the Royal seals, it is expected that there will be more active discussions further on the Royal seals taking this study as a start.
