Chinese people studying Korean language face difficulties because Chinese grammar is quite different from the Korean one. One of these difficulties is to make correspond the Korean essential adverb in Chinese. In fact, the essential adverb in Korean corresponds not only to the Chinese adverb (狀語) but also to other components.
This study is aimed at identifying the Korean essential adverb and its corresponding Chinese sentence components. Through a comparative analysis of their similarities and their differences, it could help Chinese learning Korean people and Korean learning Chinese people to understand the sentence constituents in both Chinese and Korean.
According to the National Institute of the Korean Language, the Korean essential adverb can be morphologically classified as a particle combination form, a predicate form and a standard adverbial form. However, Chinese and Korean languages’ mode of expressions are very different. Consequently, this essential adverb, formed by the attachment of “ge” to the adjective, can be seen in Chinese as a partial complement among the sentence constituents, but, since translations methods are different, they can not correspond.
The essential adverb made of adverbial case markers attached to the substantive form mostly corresponds in Chinese to the object (賓語) but also to the partial adverb (狀語). That is why this study is mainly concerned with comparing the essential adverbs formed with adverbial case markers put to the substantive and the Chinese objects (賓語) and partial adverbs (狀語) responding to them.
Based on precedent researches, this thesis discusses Korean sentence construction in presence of the essential adverb following the essential adverb morphology and, according to the National Institute of the Korean Language, the required predicate which the essential adverb needs. It also discusses the three forms “-e/ege/eseo”, “-lo”, and “-wa” in relation to the adverbial case marker attached to the substantive.
In the first chapter, the research purposes are notified and the precedent researches’ scopes and methods concerning the Korean essential adverb are detailed. In the second chapter, the Korean essential adverb and its corresponding Chinese constituents of object (賓語) and adverb’s (狀語) concept and standard characteristics are explained and morphologically classified. The third chapter deals with the Korean essential adverb’s sentence formation based on preexisting studies. After analysis, the relations of correspondence between the essential adverb and Chinese corresponding phenomena are displayed. In the fourth chapter, the commonalities and differences between the Korean essential adverb and the corresponding Chinese components are tackled through a comparative analysis. Finally, the fifth chapter summarizes the findings of each chapter of the study. It also suggests a few ideas for future researches.
