The purpose of this study was to examine the social and psychological changing process of participation in leisure dance. For this, a variety of study questions and hypothetic models were established. Study subjects were 427 participants (man=112, woman=315) in life dance at cultural centers and sport centers in Seoul and the capital area as of 2009 and they were sampled with the multi-stage stratified cluster sampling method in consideration of their economical status and residential environment.
Such demographic features as gender, age, health and academic career were examined as personal characteristic variables. Predicting elements (independent variables) were limited to physical self-competency and decision-making balance. Cognitive and behavioral changing process elements were established as changing process elements (moderator variables). Finally, intention, practicality and continuity were established as practice elements of participating in life dance (dependent variables). As analytic tools, the investigator used such questionnaires as the one developed by Ryckman (1982) and used by Han Nam-ik (2000) to examine the physical self-competency, the one developed by Marcus & Owen (1992) and modified and generalized by Kim Yeong-ho (2002) to examine decision-making balance, the one developed by Marcus etc. (1992) and modified by Kim Yeong-ho (2004) to examine changing process elements, and the one developed by Yordy & Lent (1993) to examine practice elements. Study findings are as follows:
First, as for predicting elements of participating in life dance according to study subjects' demographic features (background variables), there was a partial difference in physical self-competency and changing process elements between groups. The difference of males was bigger than that of females. When subjects were older and healthier, their physical self-competency was higher. However, when subjects' academic career was lower, their physical self-competency was higher. As for the decision-making balance. men were higher than women. The group of which age was below 29 was higher on average in both variables. As for the status of health, the healthier group expressed higher dance benefits and lower dance harms than their counterpart did.
Second, as for the sub-variables of physical self-efficacy for the participation in life dance, competency, self-confidence, muscle strength and attractiveness had a positive influence upon cognitive and behavioral changing process elements, two of the changing process elements of participating behavior. In addition, the benefit of dance, a sub-element of decision-making balance, had a positive influence upon the changing process elements of participating behavior, whereas the harm of dance had a negative influence upon it.
Third, competency and self-confidence, two sub-variables of physical self-competency for the participation in life dance, had a positive influence upon cognitive and behavioral changing process elements, two of the changing process elements of participating behavior. In addition, the benefit of dance, one sub-element of decision-making balance, had a positive influence upon the changing process elements of participating behavior, whereas the harm of dance had a negative influence upon it.
Fourth, conscious enhancement and social liberation, two sub-variables of the changing process elements of participating behavior in life dance, had a positive influence upon the practice elements of participating behavior, whereas the conversion of thought had a negative influence upon it. Among the behavioral changing process elements, support relationship, reinforcement management and self-liberation had a positive influence upon the participating behavior practice elements.
Fifth, every social and psychological variable which constituted predicting elements (physical self-competency and decision-making balance), changing process elements (cognitive and behavioral changing process elements) and practice elements (participatory intention, practicality and continuity) of participation in life dance presented higher scores on average in the maintenance stage than in the pre-planning stage.
Finally, predicting elements of participating in life dance had an influence upon cognitive and behavioral changing process elements and changing process elements had an influence upon participating behavior practice elements.
