지향성의 개념과 탐구방향

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 목적은 지향성의 개념을 명확히 하고, 지향성에 대한 탐구의 방향과 전략을 바로 잡는데 있다. 지향성은 흔히 “대함(of)”, “관함(about)”, “정향성(directed-ness)” 등의 일상 언어적 표현으로 정의되어 왔다. 그러나 지향성은 본질적으로 세계 내에 존재하거나 존재하지 않는 사물이나 사태를 대상으로 지칭하는 정신적 행위 혹은 심리적 현상이다 대상지칭으로서의 지향성은 단순한 하나의 속성이 아니라 다양한 양상과 복합적 구조를 가진 현상이다. 따라서 대상지칭의 탐구에는 존재론, 심리철학, 언어철학, 인지과학, 두뇌과학 등 다양한 영역의 여러 국면들이 개입한다. 그러나, 대상지칭으로서의 지향성에 대한 탐구는 인식적 관점과 관심에서 이루어질 때 그 본질이 명확하게 밝혀질 수 있다. 왜냐하면 지향성은 주체와 대상, 즉 유기체와 세계 내 사물과 사태 사이의 참된 인식적 관계의 확립을 목표로 하기 때문이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Intentionality has often been defined by such words as "of", "about", or "directed-ness" which are vague expressions used in our ordinary life. On the contrary, intentionality is a mental act or psychological phenomenon which refers to the individual objects or the state of affairs in the world as its object, whether they exist or not. Intentionality as objective reference is not a simple property like solubility or validity, but a phenomenon which has diverse modes of reference and forms a complicated system or structure. Thus, various aspects of many disciplines such as ontology, philosophy of mind/psychology, philosophy of language, cognitive science, brain science, and etc. must involve in the study of intentionality. However, the nature of intentionality will be disclosed clearly and correctly when studied from the cognitive point of view or interest. For intentionality as objective reference is the product of evolutionary processes which is to establish the true cognitive relation between an organism and its environment, that is, individual objects or states of affairs in the world.
