지하공간 내 효과적 상호작용을 위한 몰입요소 평가연구 = A Study on the Evaluation of immersion Elements for Effective Interactions in Underground Space

(Background and Purpose) In the modern urban environment, rapid industrialization has caused urban congestion, which has led to serious social issues, including traffic jams and lack of green space. As a result, those living in urban environments are in need of underground developments to solve the problem of poor quality of life. Fragmentary developments, that are dependent only on technological aspects without taking into account the environmental distinctiveness of underground space, fail to address the user’s psychological anxiety and thus face their limitations. This study therefore set out to investigate the psychological and physiological effects of underground space that considers environmental distinctiveness and also to promote the increased development of underground space in the future to ensure greater usability. (Method) First, existing literature and previous studies were reviewed to examine the basic concepts of underground space and psychological anxiety. Second, previous studies on immersion experiences in space were analyzed and segmented to identify and categorize elements that induce space immersion. Finally, the study analyzed examples of underground space where detailed immersion elements were applied in order to investigate the effects of the distribution as well as the frequency of immersion elements within the area composition of underground space and the impact on users’ psychological anxiety and spatial activation. (Results) In COEX, stimulus senses in the physical domain recorded the densest distribution overall, and impression senses recorded a high distribution along the boundaries that users would encounter at the beginning and end of the space. The user domain was distributed most densely at points of intersection that users would encounter after adjusting to the space. The distribution of unconscious acts was similar to that of social space across the space, which indicates that actions happening in social space were causing users to make unconscious acts. (Conclusions) The external plaza and the boundaries that users would encounter at the beginning and end of entry into the space increased connections between ground and underground spaces by offering sensory experiences. This also minimized users’ resistance when they entered the underground space, thus contributing to their revisit rates with positive impressions. Various immersion elements were arranged at a small interval along the passages most frequently traveled by users so that their immersion would be maintained. Arranging points of intersection where meeting and waiting occurred ensured that a proper psychological distance was maintained between people staying at one place for many hours and, at the same time, provided them with various opportunities to share their sentiments, thus prolonging the length of time they stayed in the space. The findings of the present study demonstrate that interactivity between underground space and users’ immersion elements resolved users’ psychological anxiety, served as an important element in underground space development, and impacted how long they stayed in the space. The study has limitations, however, in terms of the objectivity of its findings since its sample size was one. Follow-up study should therefore include more case studies and surveys.
