소우 후지모토의 주거공간에 나타난 생태적 사유로서‘원시적 미래’ 특성에 관한 연구 = A Study on the Characteristics of the 'Primitive Future' as an Ecological Thought in Sou Fujimoto's Residential Architecture

국문 초록 (Abstract)

(연구배경 및 목적) 현대 사회는 과학기술의 비약적인 발전을 통해 물질적 풍요와 편리함을 제공받았지만, 동시에 환경 파괴와 인간 소외 등의 문제를 초래하였다. 이러한 문제의 대안으로 동양의 일원론적 자연관을 기반으로 한 생태론적 패러다임이 주목받고 있으며, 일본은 이러한 자연관을 독창적으로 발전시켜 왔다. 특히, 일본의 전통 건축은 자연과 인간의 조화를 중시하며, 자연의 불확실성을 수용하는 유연한 설계를 강조하는 특징을 지닌다. 소우 후지모토는 이러한 일본 건축 전통을 현대적 사고와 결합하여‘원시적 미래’라는 철학을 제시하였다. 이는 단순히 자연을 차용하는 것을 넘어, 인간과 자연의 원시적 관계 회복을 목표로 하는 개념이다. 후지모토는 ‘원시적 미래’를 건축의 본질을 탐구하는 출발점이자 직관으로 간주하며, 본 연구는 이러한 철학이 실제 건축 실험에서 어떻게 구현되었는지를 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. (연구방법) 본 연구의 범위와 방법은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 문헌 연구를 통해 소우 후지모토의 저서, 인쇄 매체 및 영상 매체에 등장한 인터뷰 등을 참고하여 그가 주장하는 ‘원시적 미래’ 개념을 구체적으로 고찰하였다. 둘째, 이러한 고찰을 토대로 ‘원시적 미래’의 건축적 특성을 도출한 후, 사례 연구를 수행하였다. 셋째, 소우 후지모토는 거주 방식에 대한 깊은 고찰을 바탕으로 자신의 철학을 주거 공간에서 구체적으로 드러내고 있으므로, 사례 연구의 범위를 주거 공간으로 한정하고 연구를 진행하였다. 넷째, ‘원시적 미래’ 철학이 정립되던 2008년 전후의 작품을 중심으로 분석하였으며, 이를 통해 후지모토의 실제 프로젝트에서 ‘원시적 미래’ 특성들이 어떻게 실현되었는지를 구체적으로 분석하였다. 마지막으로, 연구 결과를 종합하여 소우 후지모토의 건축적 특징을 도출하고 결론을 제시하였다. (결과) 본 연구에서는 소우 후지모토의 ‘원시적 미래’ 개념이 주거 공간 설계에서 나타나는 방식을 분석 하였다. 그 결과 원시적 미래의 다섯 가지 특성인 유기적 모호성, 무질서한 우연성, 상호 연결성, 중첩적 복합성, 재귀적 확장성 의 순서대로 주거 공간에 주로 나타나고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 주거 공간에서 유기적 모호성은 내부와 외부의 경계를 흐리게 하여 모호한 공간을 제공하고, 무질서한 우연성은 공간의 불규칙한 배치를 통해 국소적 질서를 나타낸다. 상호 연결성은 네트워크 적 관계를 기반으로 다 기능적 장소를 형성하고, 재귀적 확장성은 주거 공간이 주변 환경과 사용자의 생각에 따라 제한 없이 변화하는 특성을 나타낸다. (결론) 연구 결과, 소우 후지모토의 주거 공간에서 가장 본질적인 요소는 거주자 중심의 공간 개념임을 확인할 수 있었다. 그는 주거 공간의 사적인 경계를 허물고, 끊임없이 도시 및 외부 환경과 관계를 맺도록 설계하였다. 또한, 기능 중심의 건축이 아니라, 장소로서의 건축을 추구하며 ‘열린 체계’로서의 주거 공간을 강조하였다. 이는 불확실성과 혼란을 수용하는 ‘원시적 미래’ 개념을 현대 주거 건축에 적용할 수 있는 새로운 가능성을 제시한다. 본 연구는 이러한 개념이 현대 건축에서 인간과 자연의 관계를 재정립하는 중요한 실험이 될 수 있음을 시사하며, 향후 주거 공간 설계에서 보다 유연하고 개방적인 접근이 필요함을 강조한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

(Background and Purpose) Modern society has achieved material abundance and convenience through the rapid advancement of science and technology. However, this has also caused issues, such as environmental destruction and human alienation. In this context, an ecological paradigm based on a monistic view of nature in Eastern philosophy is gaining attention as an alternative. Japan has uniquely developed this perspective on nature. Traditional Japanese architecture emphasizes harmony between humans and nature and embraces the uncertainties of nature through flexible design. Sou Fujimoto has combined this tradition with modern thinking to propose the philosophy of the "Primitive Future." This philosophy goes beyond merely borrowing the elements of nature; it aims to restore the primordial relationship between humans and nature. Fujimoto regards the "Primitive Future" as both a starting point and an intuitive approach to exploring the essence of architecture. This study examines how this philosophy has been realized through architectural experiments. (Method) The scope and methodology of this study are as follows: The literature review primarily referenced Sou Fujimoto's books, printed media, and interviews featuring videos. Based on this, the concept of "Primitive Future," as proposed by Sou Fujimoto, was examined in detail. From this examination, architectural characteristics of the Primitive Future" were derived, followed by a case study. Sou Fujimoto revealed his philosophy through a profound exploration of residential spaces grounded in his contemplation of how people inhabit spaces. Therefore, the scope of the case study was limited to residential spaces, focusing on works from around 2008, a period when his "Primitive Future" philosophy was being established. Through the case study, the study specifically analyzed how the characteristics of the "Primitive Future" were realized in Fujimoto's actual projects and synthesized the findings to conclude. (Results) This study analyzed how Sou Fujimoto's concept of "Primitive Future" manifests in residential space design. The analysis revealed that the five characteristics of "Primitive Future"—organic ambiguity, disordered contingency, interconnectivity, layered complexity, and recursive expandability—appear in residential spaces in this order of prominence. In these spaces, organic ambiguity blurs the boundaries between the interior and exterior, providing ambiguous spaces. Disordered contingencies introduce local order through irregular spatial arrangements. Interconnectivity creates multifunctional spaces based on networked relationships, and recursive expandability reflects the capacity of residential spaces to transform limitlessly according to the surrounding environment and user intent. (Conclusion) The essence of Sou Fujimoto's residential space lies in its user-centered nature. Fujimoto challenges the boundaries of private residential spaces by continuously fostering relationships with the city and the external environment. Moreover, he seeks architecture as a "place" rather than merely functional structures, envisioning residential spaces as "open systems." This approach encapsulates the chaos and uncertainty inherent in the "Primitive Future" and proposes new possibilities for contemporary residential architecture.
