When we consider the status of Korean traditional music in Korea, it is difficult to deny the truth that Korean traditional music has been neglected and has even been the subject of discrimination. This is particularly true in the field of education. Under these difficult circumstances, we cannot simply solve this problem through an emotional appeal to love and respect “our Korean music” as Koreans. Instead, I would like to highlight the lack of research and study that deal with the potential role that Korean traditional music could play in education. Moreover, I believe that Korean traditional music can provide the solution to many of our society’s contemporary problems, which are caused by a loss of humanity. This study originated from my strong belief that the study of philosophical thought in Korean traditional music can provide new ideas and a new perspective on how to cultivate humanity in Korean society. In this paper, I call attention to the central problem facing Korean traditional music in Korea while at the same time providing an explanation of the philosophical basis of Korean traditional music. In particular, I focus on the cultivation of human nature, based on the analysis of the concept of Ye-ak[禮樂] in the book of Simgyeongbuju[心經附註]. In this study, I also highlight the important link between the geomungo, which has been considered the core instrument among all traditional instruments, and the cultivation of human nature and humanity. In the philosophy of Confucianism, Ye-ak is regarded as the most important tool in the study and practice of the cultivation of human nature. Although there are many perspectives on how to view human nature in Confucianism, the “main stream” view of human nature is that the nature of all humans is originally calm and tranquil. However, many academics have argued that it is difficult to maintain the original calm and tranquil nature of our mind because of the mind’s characteristic of being easily distracted by outer or internal stimuli. That is why, in Confucianism, the cultivation of the original human nature is regarded as the highest pursuit and the practice of music is the main method used to cultivate our original human nature. In Confucian philosophy, the contemplation of Ye-ak is regarded as the main path to the cultivation of humanity. For example, the kings of the Yaoshun [堯舜] dynasty selected Ye-ak as one of the main subjects to be taught to their princes. It has been said that music is the gateway to the practice of virtue. This may be an example of the close link between music and humanity. In the cultivation of humanity, the key issue is how to cultivate calmness and tranquility in a human mind which is easily distracted by outer or internal stimuli. This is why it is important to recognize the two characteristic sides of the human mind: calmness and fluctuation. In Confucius philosophy, the concept of Gi[氣] contains a natural tendency toward flowing movement. Particularly, the main characteristic is that calm mind flows easily to distracted thoughts. Changing the tendency of a fluctuating mind into a calm and stable state of mind is the key point in the cultivation of humanity. In Confucianism, the name for the practice of maintaining a calm and stable state of mind is called gyeong[敬]. Why is it that only the geomungo[琴] has been used in the practice of gyeong, and why is it called “the core instrument among all traditional Korean musical instruments?” I have come to the conclusion that the geomungo has a special characteristic that is related to the cultivation of the mind: a sound that arrises from silence, and then soon fades away, leaving only a remaining sense of calm and composed sound. This sound is followed by another sound, which again fades out in the same way. In between these sounds, with the slow change from sound to silence guided by the gentle plucking of the geomungo, our minds become naturally calm and composed. This is the reason why we should take note of the importance of the geomungo. The practice of gyeong can be naturally accomplished through the practice of playing or listening to the geomungo. When it comes to the cultivation of the mind, the critical moment is when our mind first shows a tendency toward distraction and fluctuation. If we apply the principle of geomungo to education we can not only discover the secret of the geomungo as the foremost instrument used in the cultivation of human nature, but also open new possibilities for applying these principles to the education of music in Korea. I also hope that this idea will serve as a platform from which studies of greater depth and practical application in music education may be undertaken.
