In the context of population decline and the emerging issue of regional extinction, foreigners constitute an important segment of the local economically active population. Consequently, many regions are attempting to develop policies to attract foreign residents. Since the purpose and characteristics of foreigners’ residence in Korea vary by nationality, policies differentiated by nationality are required. For this purpose, it is necessary to analyze the distribution of foreign residents by nationality; however, such studies remain insufficient. This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution of foreign residents by nationality, identify their characteristics, and derive the factors influencing their distribution. The temporal scope of the study was set to the year 2022, and the spatial scope encompassed all Si, Gun and Gu nationwide. Spatial mapping and multiple regression analysis were employed as the primary research methods. The main findings are as follows: First, employment in agriculture, forestry, and fisheries has a positive effect on the population from Southeast Asia and Southwest Asia. Second, employment in the manufacturing sector positively influences the populations from Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, Southwest Asia, and Central Asia/Russia. Third, employment in knowledge-based service industries has a positive effect on the population from North America and Europe. Fourth, the number of universities positively affects the population of the four nationality groups excluding North America and Europe. Fifth, the presence of foreign schools and foreign missions positively affects the population from North America and Europe. Sixth, the number of detached houses positively influences the populations from Southeast Asia and Southwest Asia, while the number of housing units within non-residential buildings positively affects the population from Northeast Asia. These findings confirm that the factors influencing the selection of residential areas differ by nationality and can serve as valuable data for developing nationality-specific foreign resident attraction policies.
