학위논문 SGML DTD 및 데이타베이스 구축에 관한 연구 = (A) Study on the SGML DTD and Database for Theses and Dissertations

국문 초록 (Abstract)

정보기술의 발전이 도서관자동화에 반영되면서 도서관은 급속한 변화를 겪고 있다. 최근에는 문헌의 전문을 디지털 형태로 전송 받아 재활용할 수 있고 전문(全文)검색이 가능한 디지털도서관이 미래 도서관의 새로운 서비스 모형으로 연구되고 있다. 국가적인 차원에서도 정보인프라의 기본으로서 디지털도서관에 대한 관심이 높아가고 있다. 학위논문은 자료의 활용도가 높고 전자화된 문헌을 확보하기가 비교적 쉬우며 저작권 문제 해결이 용이하다는 점에서 디지털도서관의 1차 대상이 될 것으로 생각된다.
디지털도서관의 핵심인 데이터베이스를 구축하는 방법은 여러 가지가 있으나 그 중에서도 문헌을 외형적 요소가 아닌 구조 및 내용으로 분석하고 이를 마크업 함으로써 정보를 구조적으로 표현하고 검색할 수 있는 SGML(Standard Generalized Markup Language)이 새로운 전자문헌 구축의 표준으로 부각되고 있다. SGML은 텍스트, 그래픽, 오디오 및 비디오 등을 포함하는 멀티미디어 전자문헌들을 서로 다른 시스템들 간에 정보의 손실 없이 효율적으로 전송, 저장 및 자동 처리하기 위한 목적으로 제정된 국제표준이다.
본 연구에서는 SGML을 이용하여 학위논문을 디지털화하는 방법에 대해 연구하였다. 연구방법은 다음과 같다. 첫째, SGML의 개념, 구조, 장점에 대하여 조사하였다. 둘째, DTD를 작성하기 위한 과정에 대하여 연구하고 이를 이용하여 학위논문 DTD를 설계하였다. DTD설계를 위하여 7개 대학의 석사·박사학위논문 14종을 표본으로 추출하여 문헌을 분석하였으며, 기존에 이미 작성된 여러 DTD들을 분석하여 설계의 장점을 본 DTD에 반영하였다. 셋째, 설계된 학위논문 DTD를 이용하여 실제 SGML 문헌인스턴스(document instance)를 구축하고 이를 SGML브라우저와 웹브라우저를 통해 검색해 봄으로써 SGML을 이용한 학위논문 디지털도서관의 프로토타잎을 제시하고자 하였다. 넷째, 문헌인스턴스의 구축은 학생들이 이미 워드프로세서로 작성한 학위논문을 디스켓이나 FTP로 인수하여 자동마크업 과정을 통해 저렴한 비용으로 데이터베이스를 구축할 수 있도록 하였으며, DTD 설계 시에도 이러한 자동변환 목적을 반영하였다.
본 논문에서 설계한 학위논문 DTD는 국내 학위논문의 특성을 분석하여 작성되었으므로 학위논문 디지털도서관에 바로 적용할 수 있을 것으로 생각된다. 본 연구과정에서 SGML을 이용하여 문헌을 구조적으로 표현하고 활용하기 위해서는 먼저 문헌자체의 표준화가 선행되어야 한다는 사실을 발견하였다. 아직 각 대학의 학위논문 형식이 표준화되어있지 않고 다양하여 하나의 DTD에 그것을 모두 수용한다는 것은 매우 어렵고 힘든 작업이다. 따라서, 국가적인 차원에서 학위논문 작성 방법 및 출력에 대한 표준을 정하고 이를 기준으로 국가적인 차원에서 학위논문 DTD를 개발하여 사용한다면 보다 쉽게 디지털도서관을 구축할 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

As the development of information technologies are being reflected in the automation of library, our libraries are experiencing rapid changes. Recently, the digital libraries which allow for transmission and re-use of digitized literature as well as retrieval of fulltexts are being spotlighted as new library service model of the future. Also in the national dimension, the digital library draws much attention as the key to the information infrastructuring. It is conceived that degree dissertations will be the primary target of the digital library services because they are heavily referred to, easy to be computerized and subject little to the disputes of copyrights.
There are several ways to construct the database, a core of digital library. Among them, the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) which can be used to analyze and mark up the literature not as external elements but as structure and contents only to be expressed and retrieved structurally emerges as standard for construction of new electronic literature. SGML is an international standard designed to effectively transmit, store and auto-process the multi-media electronic literature including text, graphic, audio and video among different systems without loss of information.
This study is aimed at reviewing how to digitize the degree dissertations using SGML. This study is structured as follows First, the concept, structure and advantages of SGML were examined. Second, the processes for designing DTD were reviewed and thereby, an degree dissertation DTD was designed. In order to design the DTD, 14 master and Ph. D dissertations from 7 local universities were sampled to be analyzed for their literature, while various preceding DTD's were also analyzed to have their design strengths reflected in researcher's DTD. Third, an actual SGML document instance was constructed using the Ph. D dissertation DTD designed, and it was retrieved through the Web Browser to suggest a prototype for degree dissertation digital libraries. Fourth, the document instance was constructed in such a way that students might download the wordprocessed dissertations into their diskette or FTP to construct their own databases through automatic mark-up at cheaper costs. Such an auto conversion was also reflected in DTD designing.
Since the degree dissertation DTD designed in this study is based on the analysis of characteristics of local degree dissertations, it is considered to be directly applied to the degree dissertation digital libraries. Through this study, it is found that structural expression and uses of literature using SGML should be preceded by the standardization of literature itself. The degree dissertation forms of local universities have not been standardized but diverse, making it difficult or laborious to accommodate all degree dissertations into a DTD.
Accordingly, it is perceived that it will be easier to construct a digital library if the formats and output of degree dissertations should be standardized and thereby, a degree dissertation DTD be developed through a national effort.
