경로당의 역할에 관한 연구 : 남자회원들의 생활상을 중심으로 With the Focus on Male Members = A Study on the Roles of Senior Centers

This study was carried out to look into the degree of acceptance on the roles of senior centers with a view to providing basic data for the reestablishment of their roles.
Under the assumption that there would be not a few regional differences in the degree of acceptance, 9 senior centres were chosen which were expected to show the typical characteristics of urban and rural areas. The survey was made on the male members by use of the method of interviews. 232 questionnaires were collected and statistically anaylzed by means of SPSS.
The obtained results are as follows.
1. The educational background of urban members was a little higher than that of rural members. As for the family structure, fewer members in urban areas lived with their offspring than in rural areas.
2. It was revealed by latent factors that most members accepted the roles of senior centers as "affection and feeling of belonging" and "self-realization" which belong to the second and third stage respectively in teh hierarchy of human needs. Among these two latent factors, only "affection and feeling of belonging" factor showed a significant regional difference. the mean values of which were 3.84 and 3.72 respectively in urban and rural areas.
3. The days of utilization per month and the number of games were about 20 days and 2 games repectively, with few regional differences. When it comes to the hours of utilization per day, the number of participation in picnics per year, and the number of participation as a volunteer, urban members were superior to rural members. However, 34.2 per cent of urban members got along without lunch, while no members in rural areas, which showed that more members in urban areas belong to the absolutesly poor class.
These results imply that senior centers should not be simply a temporary recreational place any longer. Instead they should be accepted a sa structural unit of a community and provided with proper public health services. Therefore, it is desirable that local governments should develop proper programs suitable for the regional characteristics of senior centers. Such programs should include not only recreational activities but also voluntary public services and avocation.
