Blake's ideas as a prophetic poet can be well shown in Marriage. The main subject of Marriage is the conflict between Energy and Reason. This thesis traces the aspects of that conflict to Blake's apocalyptic vision. Energy and Reason are the two contraries necessary to human existence. In Marriage Blake as a priest of Energy appears in the shapes of 'the just man', 'the Devil', 'the Prolific' and 'the son of fire'. The priest of Reason appears in the shapes of the villain', 'the Angel', 'the Devourer' and 'the starry king'. The one group conflicts with the other. The conflict ends by the triumph of Energy.
Blake thinks Energy is the source of all the physical and mental activities of creatures. Reason is, in Blake, an evil force to oppress and limit the natural overflow of Energy. Blake thinks Energy is 'the only life' and 'Eternal Delight'. Energy is also the cause of the creative power, namely Imagination. Imagination is the power to improve 'sensual enjoyment'. In Blake, man's five senses are 'narrow chinks' through which we can see the finite of all creation. Imagination reveals the divine and the infinite, hidden in all creation. The moment of this revelation is that of God's apocalypse. Therefore, Imagination is 'the human form of the divine'. Through the speeches of Elijah and Ezekiel, Blake identifies Imagination(Poetic Genius) with God Himeslf. In Blake, religion has come into existence from poetic tales. Religion is the abstraction and systematization of poetic tales. Reversely Blake let the Devil write the 'Bible of Hell' and reduce religion to poetic tales. 'A Song of Liberty' illustrates the Devil's 'Bible of Hell'. This short poem proclaims the defeat of the mental and social tyrants, who are the priests of Reason, and the triumph of the revolutionary power as creative Energy. Thus, the horses of instruction in chains being loosed from the dens, the Angel is transformed into another Devil.
By developing the sensibility of others, Devil's Bible of Hell' expands men's inner selves and realizes men's freedom. Devil's 'Bible of Hell' is the sacred code of poetry by which we can pursue the real development of human society. In Blake, art is the only means to reveal God's apocalyptic vision.
