Today, the term ‘posthuman’ encapsulates the ontological transformation of human existence prompted by advances in science and technology-namely, the process of becoming a being beyond the human or a new kind of human. The posthuman condition reveals the convergence of biology and technoscience, wherein the boundaries between these domains increasingly blur. Future discussions of the posthuman condition will necessarily take place within a complex techno-cultural landscape, where heterogeneous pairings―humans and non-human technological beings―form hybrid assemblages. Although a comprehensive understanding of the posthuman requires examining all aspects of this hybridity, this paper narrows its focus to trace the evolutionary path from machines to posthumans. It collectively refers to the multilayered and hybrid assemblages that possess either partial human origins or wholly artificial existences, in terms of intelligence or corporeality, as ‘intelligent machine.’ This study aims to theoretically and practically examine the evolutionary pathways through which intelligent machines―emerging from the convergence of artificial intelligence, artificial life, and artificial body technologies―become posthuman subjects. Chapter II lays the theoretical groundwork by exploring: first, the theoretical possibility of artificial intelligence evolving into superintelligence; second, the potential emergence of artificial consciousness based on the principle of “emergence” in artificial life technologies; and third, issues related to cognition and embodiment that influence consciousness. Chapter III analyzes Sci-Fi films that explore the possibilities of intelligent machines awakening to consciousness or evolving emergently into entities beyond it. To this end, it first analyzes the drama Westworld (Seasons 1-4, 2016-2022), which experiments with the emergence of artificial consciousness through the interaction of recursive narrative loops and mutation variables, illustrating the process of becoming posthuman. Second, it analyzes the film series Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017), which pose complex questions concerning creation and evolution through the relationships among multi-layered beings, and explore how intelligent machines may move toward a mechanical becoming-subject beyond the posthuman.
