Compared to normal children, mentally disable children have difficulty in communication with others and in social life because o fproblems with language.
Restricted and undifferentiated communications makes mentally disabled children feel as failure because they cannot satisfy their communication desire. It also makes the counter-partner feel frustrated.
Therefore, in the aspects of language accquirement and communication activities, it si essential to let the disable children learn and communicate voluntarily.
Music proveides the unthreatening and interesting stimulus as non-language communication vehicle. Musical experiences for mentally disable children's are multi-stimulating experiences that make a positive influence in speech and language development and development of variety of talents.
There are many communication intervention and method to treat the mentally disable children. One of the most effective treatments ofr mentally disable children to acquire communication techniques by expressing the language more naturally and joyfully is the musical therapy.
This study focus on 4 mentally disables elementary school students. Even though they have speaking ability, they have difficulties in voluntary communication and response due to insufficient expressive vocabulary.
Because the children are elementary school students, this dissertation study observes the effect of mentally disable children's communication techniques (response action and attempt action ) through music therapy activities centered with the words of a song used in real life, and having the basic learning concepts.
Music therapy was taken 20 minutes, 2 times per week and was carried out in total of 20 sessions for 10 weeks. Every session was composed of opening song, main activities with communication-centered programs, and farewell song.
Of total 20 sessions, experiment procedures use 12 subjects and 4 songs. During 1 session, one activity program was implemented in the packaged form with 2 or 3 subjects and 1song. Also, one activity program was preceded with continuously repeated format for 5 sessions.
This study analyzes children's communication technique referring to response action and attempt action through video tape observation.
Also, this study measured the receptive and expressive language by PRE(Preschool Receptive-Expressive Language Scale) as a test tool in order to examine the pre-post language ability for respectife children as pre-post period of therapy activity.
First result of this study showed that music therapy with song was effective for mentally disable children in enhancing the communication techniques cnetered with communication response and in attempt action by in reasing the communication action incidence.
Secondly, pre-post comparison test with PRES showed that the music therapy with song was effective on improvement the receptive and expressive language ability of 4 children.
These results came to agreement with previous studies that music has influence on vocabulary development and communication ability improvement for mentally disable children.
This study also showed improvement in clearness of language with reception and expression language. This result came to agreement with singing song is effective for mentally disable children in improving the expressive language and in promoting clearness of the language.
In future, the study needs to extend the communication objects to parents, normal children and another children who have difficulty in using spoken language. Also, it will need to study the effect of communication techniques in more depth and in long-term with various other music therapy programs.
