<주생전>의 문체론적 접근 = A Stylistic Approach of <Ju-saeng-j&#335;n>

It is presurned that Ju-saeng-jŏn was written by Kwŏn Pil in the late 16th century or the early 17th century. The main motif of this work is a dramatic rcmance, having a mimetic tendency. Seen in novel history, this work is regarded as a bridge between the early novel and the novel since 17th century. The previous studies of Ju-saeng-jŏn indicate that Ju-saeng-jŏn is composed of the unique union of verse and prose influenced from the Jŏnki novel(傳奇小說). This study intends to examine the way the stylistic traits give rise to literary effects and the meaning.
The characteristics of discourse mode in Ju-saeng-jŏn is the union of narrative prose style and lyric verse style. Genre is classified by the way discourse is presented and the world which is evoked by the discourse. Discourse mode is related with the question 'by whose voice or what kind of laguage form the author's vision is presented' Therefore, the perspective and language form of discourse are raised as important components. This study which tries to approach Ju-saeng-jŏn stylistically examines the discourse mode of Ju-saeng-jŏn centering on the perspective and language form and reveals the thematic meaning of this work and its limitation, focusing on the evoked world in the work.
The mixed weave between narrative discourse and lyric discourse in Ju-saeng-jŏn brings aboot the lyric condensation of narrative process. Lyric verse is presented by a direct narration through the inner perspective of the character ml foregrounds the internal emotion of the character about the narrative events. Ju-saeng-jŏn establishes Ju-saeng as a focalized character and delivers the recognition of Ju-saeng about the narrative events and his internal world. The narrative events Ju-saeng experiences are an applicaticn for the government service examination and its failure, and an achievement of love and its frustration. Lyric verse which is presented in the weave with the narrative development expresses the emotional state of Ju-saeng aboot these events.
Tre sentiment of Ju-saeng aboot the narrative event carries a tragic tone, which is produced with the characteristics of language forml as a poetic language. The poems in Ju-saeng-jŏn are developed through the metaphorical expansion. This kind of poetic principle repeatedly strengthens the tragic sentiment. The relationship between the evoked emotion in poem and the narrative context is the relation of matrix am expansion. The matrix of lyric verses in Ju-saeng-jŏn is the Ju-saeng's monologue after his failure of the examination. It is a sense of transiency of life and frustration. These sentiments are repeatedly presented by expansion in lyric verses.
Therefore, Ju-saeng-jŏn which focuses on the internal emotional state of the character about the narrative events is a character centerd narrative. Ire ideological intention of Ju-saeng who is a focalized character is presented in his viewpoint of love. The love in Ju-saeng is a kind of complementary value, not an counter-value against the value of success in life. This is a limitation of Ju-saeng-jŏn. The achievement of love in Ju-saeng-jŏn is a romantic substitute for a frustration in reality. As a result, the contradition of reality which causes a tragedy is weakened or excluded.
