국문장편소설에 나타난 쌍둥이 양상과 의미 고찰 = A Study on the Patterns and Meaning of Twins in Korean full-length classical novels

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 국문장편소설에 다수 등장하는 ‘쌍둥이’의 다양한 양상을 분류하고 그 의미를 규명함으로써 국문장편소설에 내재한 사대부층의 쌍둥이에 대한 인식을 찾고자 한다. 현재 대중문화에도 많이 소환되는 쌍둥이를 사대부층은 어떻게 바라보고 있는지 확인할 수 있었다.
국문장편소설에 등장하는 쌍둥이가 많은 인물 관계 속에서 어떠한 역할을 담당하는지에 초점을 맞추어 그 양상을 쌍둥이의 측면과 가문의 측면으로 나누었다. 쌍둥이의 측면에서는 첫째, 대립․갈등형 쌍둥이로, 쌍둥이 사이 혹은 쌍둥이로 인한 다른 형제간의 갈등을 일으키는 경우이다. 둘째, 협력․상보형 쌍둥이로, 서로 힘을 더하여 외적이나 국가, 가문을 지키거나 위기를 극복해 나가는 경우이다. 셋째, 독립․개체형 쌍둥이로, 외모와 성격이 다르거나 자라온 환경이 다름으로써 개별적 삶을 살게 되는 경우이다. 서로의 삶에 크게 영향을 미치지 않거나 헤어짐으로 인해 각자의 삶을 살아간다. 가문의 측면에서는 첫째, 계후․지속형 쌍둥이로 가문 내 계후로 입적한 쌍둥이로 계후 문제에 상대적으로 부담을 줄여 가문을 이어가는 경우이다. 둘째, 치유․회복형 쌍둥이로, 쌍둥이가 가족의 빈 자리를 회복함으로써 아픔과 트라우마를 치유하는 경우이다.
사대부를 주 독자층으로 갖고 있는 국문장편소설에서 쌍둥이는 다음과 같은 의미를 내포하고 있다고 하겠다. 첫째, 국문장편소설에서 쌍둥이는 같은 유전자를 공유한 같음의 상징이면서 각기 다른 사고와 자질을 지닌 독립체로서 다름을 인지하고 있다. 즉, 쌍둥이를 이분법적으로 바라보지 않고 복합적으로 인식하고 있다고 하겠다. 둘째, 국문장편소설에서 많은 쌍둥이를 통해 가문의 정체성 확립은 물론 번영을 향한 의지를 잘 드러내고 있다. 조선 후기 사대부들의 분열과 불안한 심리는 쌍둥이의 단합과 조화의 모습을 통해 더욱 공고히 하려는 의지를 강하게 표출하고 있다. 셋째, 국문장편소설의 쌍둥이는 시간상 큰 차이가 없는 쌍둥이를 통해 가부장제라는 수직적 질서를 공고히 하려 한다. 즉, 같은 날 간만의 차이로 태어나 형이 되고 아우가 되어 가문에서의 위치가 확연히 달라지는 서사를 통해 시간 차를 둔 형제보다 유교적 질서를 더욱 강조할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study focuses on how twins, who are currently often appeared to popular culture, have been produced in the Korean full-length classical novels and what they mean. The purpose of this study was to see the perceptions of the nobleman about twins born on the same day and living various lives.
Focusing on the role of the twins in the relationship of many characters in the Korean full-length classical novels, the aspects were divided into the sides of the twins and the sides of the family. In terms of twins, the first is confrontation and conflict-type twins, which cause conflict between twins or other brothers due to twins. Second, a case of cooperative and complementary twins that join forces with each other to protect the country, or family from the enemies, or to overcome crisis. Third, independent and individual twins, who live individual lives because of different appearances and personalities, or because the environment in which they grew up is different. Each lives their own lives because they are not significantly affecting each other’s lives or because of separation. In terms of the family, the first is a case of the twin who registered as the descendant of the family relatively reduces the burden of the succession problem and continues the family. Second, it is a case of healing and recovery twins who heal pain and trauma by filling the void of the family.
In the Korean full-length classical novels, which has the nobleman as its main readers, twins have the following meanings. First, in the Korean full-length classical novels, twins are recognized not only as symbols of the same nature that share the same genes but also as independents with different thoughts and qualities. It can be said that twins are not viewed in a dichotomy but are perceived complexly. Second, by featuring many twins in the Korean novel, it is well revealed not only the establishment of the family’s identity but also the will to prosper. Twins are symbols of family prosperity and also responsible for filling the fastest-dead family members. Third, the twins in the Korean full-length classical novels try to solidify the vertical order of patriarchy through twins who do not differ significantly in time. In other words, the Confucian order can be more emphasized through a narrative of twins who significantly change their position in the family than the other brothers.
