A tendency of recent scholarship has been to reduce the meaning of erōs in all instances to sexual desire. This is just one important instance in which modern assumptions about erōs color the interpretation of classical texts. In this paper, I set out not only to explain the assertion that erotic passion was a causal factor in the emergence and maintenance, as well as the decline, of the Greek polis, but also erōs, the most private of passions, was believed by ancient political thinkers to be of the utmost public relevance. For them, the term erōs included the ordinary meanings of love and sexuality but went beyond these to embrace a wide array of inclinations comprising ambition, patriotism, and other aspirations that were properly political in nature.
First of all. in Greek cosmogonies we find two forms of the god Erōs. The elder of the two, the primordial Erōs, is as old as the world, and consequently much older than Aphrodite, while the young Erōs is a relative newcomer. The old Erōs of Hesod’ Theogony is not the principle of union of the couple and does not join together two to make a third. Rather, he who by his limitless power and his very immensity belongs to the realm of the superabundance is the mythical origin of political erōs in ancient Greek world. Apart from the primordial Erōs, the young son of Aphrodite always mediates between two terms whose binary relationship is problematic. That’s the point that A different group of words, for example, aphrodisia and (more rarely) aphrodite, was sometimes used to mean, respectively, sexual pleasures and sexual desire, often without reference to the elder of the two Erōs. In general, cognates of aphrodite referred to sexual arousal and were rarely used in political contexts.
Next, as far as Thucydides’ erotic discourse is concerned, when we turn to the question of imperialism and to his similarly erotic descriptions of the lust for overseas empire and the desire to dominate far-off lands, the connection between erōs and political passion seems more evident to the modern mind. Enough has been written in postcolonial theory about the erotic aspects of aggression, including the sadistic and sexual aspects of dominating the other, to make this particular connection between erōs and politics. For example, the Athenians’ erōs, viz., his term ‘pleonexia’ in the Sicilian expedition, Pericles’ striking metaphor of the city’s erastai in his funeral oration, and both an incurable erōs and ascent from the individual erōs to the communal erōs in the speech of Diodotus during the debate over how to punish the Mytilenians for rebelling
In Plato’ Symposium there are Phaedrus’ band of lovers, tyranny and paiderastia in Pausanias, the legality of men-men desires in Plato’s Aristophanes, and the love of immortal honor in Diotima-Socrates’ speech. In these we realize sexual desire would be one limited type of eros among other types of erōs and the co-connection between politics and erōs once more.
This article’s thesis is that erōs is used in more meanings than sexuality, especially related to the realm of nation. But the fact that erōs is the root of the political protest and the revolutionary pool containing completely different form of life mirrors the political potential of erōs and warnings of its dangers.
