The aim of the present study is to examine the problems in adapting or rewriting the shamanist narrative Princess Bari for the children. Some scholars, such as Choi Un-sik and Kim Gi-chang, emphasize that the main objectives of rewriting folktale, myths, and legends for the children can be briefly summed up as the two things: to educate the children as a man of integrity and to cherish the legacy of cultural heritages. However, in order to transmit effectively the quintessential elements of the traditional tale into a form of the children's literature, contemporary writers must have a genuine understanding of the cultural values and artistic principles of the traditional tale as its source. In particular, those who want to rewrite or adapt shamanic narratives for the fairy tale should overcome the prejudices against shamanism because it has been for long disregarded as superstition.
The texts which I have analyzed in the present work are three shamanist narrative songs and two fairy tales. Two of the three shamanist narratives songs were told and performed by two female shamans (Pae Kyong-jae, Mun Do˘k-sun) from Seoul and its suburbs. These shamans were recruited by the spirits. The other narrative song was told and performed by a male shaman (Kim So˘k-chul) from the East Coast, who inherited his function from his parents. As for the two fairy tales, one was adapted by Film Director Jang Sun-Woo for the animation film and the other by Huh Eun-mi, a female writer who majored in German literature and has rewritten Korean folktales for the children.
I have analyzed these five tales in terms of Confucianism, feminism, and symbolism, while relating: each of them to the shamanist world view. One of the fundamental values of Korean shamanism as a religion is 'harmony beween Yin and Yang,' in other words, harmony between Heaven, Earth, and Man. The shamanist narrative Princess Bari deals with a heroic journey into the other world of a princess, who was abandoned at birth by her parents and summoned at the age of 15 to bring the elixir from the other world for the recovery of her ailing parents. By resuscitating her parents by means of the elixir and magic flowers, she restores the harmony between Yin and Yang in the male-dominated society of Choso˘n governed by Confucian values. Though the shamanist narrative presents Princess Bari as a dutiful daughter, it transcends the ethical values of Confucianism and challenges the patriarchal society of Choso˘n.
As for the fairy tales of Princess Bari, Huh Eun-mi rewrites the shamanist tale realistically by omitting many supernatural details, whereas Jang Sun-Woo adds conspicuously supernatural elements to his tale. He seems to take these supernatural elements from foreign folktales and Buddhist tales to enhance the universality of his tale. Huh Eun-mi's reluctance to include the mystical and ritual elements of the shamanist narrative into her story as well as Jang Sun-Woo's enthusiasm for supernatural elements taken from diverse cultural traditions can be both considered as ineffective in cherishing the cultural legacy of Korean shamanism. In Huh Eun-mi's tale, Princess Bari is characterized as a simple incarnation of filial piety, not a human being in flesh and blood. Ironically enough, though Huh Eun-mi is a contemporary writer, her feminism is less rabical than the female shamans's. As for Jang Sun-Woo's tale, the most serious problem is that he ruins the traditional symbolism of the Korean culture by presenting the four divine mythic animals in Korean symbolism as four evil creatures. Moreover, both of them present Korean shamanism as inferior to Buddhism by modifying shamanistic details into Buddhist ones.
