Zombies have been surging both in films and books of the post-colonial horror industry as a prevalent monster figure of massive violence and bloodshed terror. The commercial success of the zombie genre worth about billions of dollars in the global market may be unrivaled and even unexpected in its scale under the conditions of the worldwide economic slump. Tracing its historic transformation of the zombie metaphor from negro slaves of the colonial period to the mindless consumers of the post-colonial, this paper studies the equation of the popularity of the zombie genre in the cultural industry with the rapid increase of the displaced people in society who have been unprecedentedly driven out to the bare life condition of competing for survival, similarly to the living dead condition of zombies. At its very inception, the zombie was a mere symbol for the eternal labour in the colonial St. Domingue (later Haiti), a place of fear and fascination to the Western colonizers. Those black bodies in enslavement were conceived and imagined as the others in safe distance not only due to the geographical remoteness but also due to the psychological distance created as a result of thingification, which means an ideological reduction of the colonized into things for the ends of the colonizers. After their independence in the nineteenth century, however, they began to be imagined and understood as even more threatening when the colonizers put on them the horrible color of cannibalism. Since then, ironically, they have become more entertaining in the apocalypse industry. Now the zombie represents the mass anxiety of being de-humanized under transnational capitalism where the majority of people find themselves becoming zombies in the real sense, because they are treated as non-humans immediately if the global commodities turn out unaffordable to them. In this way, people become zombified within their own territory of the global empire, and those internal zombies keep appearing everywhere.
