This paper introduces the way films can be adopted as suppementary materials for literary criticism course for the juniors and seniors majoring in English literature. The lectures and discussions are aimed at being able to view and analyze English literature based on different ideologies. Also, the students must realize that understanding and commenting on English literature is not just an abstract study far from our daily lives, but is a field where we can rediscover the political, economical and cultural aspects of our own society. So, with movies based on original novels, the course not only seems more practical to the class, but assists the students in finding the different thoughts within the contents of the book. Marxism, for example, is a topic which many Korean students are familiar with. From a historical outlook, we can easily see how huge the effects of the development and downfall of communism, or Marxist nations had in the shaping of the balance of power in the world today. But the influence Marxism had on the many controversial issues within our everyday lives, such as race, gender, class and also capitalism in general, has not been fully appreciated. For studying Marxism, Upton B. sinclair`s Jungle is appropriate in discussing Marxism` s ideology in contrast to that of capitalism, and the movie The Great Gatsby is also a great reference for taking a closer look at the conflicts between the upper and lower classes. The movie The Great Gatsby is based on the novel by F.Scott Fitzgerald, which was published in 1925. Adapted by Francis Ford Coppola and was a big success. Before viewing the film, several questions in relation to Gatsby` s place in the social structure, and the characterization of the men and women appearing in the film are asked to the class. While seeing the movie, the students are encouraged to organize their own thoughts on the social hierarchy and the way it affects the character`s behavior, as well as the collapse of moral standards next to the power of capitalism. Through this, the students are able to obtain the ability to see not only the novel and the film, but Marxism itself from many different viewpoints. As for Feminism class, the discussion continues on the films such as The Age of Innocence and The Color Purple. Martin Scorsese directed the film The Age of Innocence, which was released in 1993, and the original novel won the Pulitzer Prize years earlier in 1921. The Color Purple was published in 1982 and received the Pulitzer Prize the next year, and two years later the movie The Color Purple was released, with Steven Spielberg as the director. And just like with the other films, before watching The Age of Innocence and The Color Purple, the class is asked to keep a few thoughts in mind. In The Age of Innocence, not only can you find the two genders at the point of debate, but also two very contrasting types of women characters are the subject of discussions. The Color Purple has more than just feminist elements- e.g. racism. Dealing with the life of a black girl in the South, on the surface the film shows the black being oppressed by the white, but there is also a distinct discrimination between the men and women within the black society. Approaching the literary criticism course with supplementary films, the students seem to find themselves more familiar with analyzing and criticizing their own social ideological issues around them as well as the literary works in films. Thus, students can be successfully urshered into a more critical way of thinking- i.e. criticism-, in stead of simply being absorbed into American Hollywood culture.
