국제화 시대의 민족주의 연구 = A Study on Nationalism in the Internationalization Era

At the end of the 20th century, we now observe the internationalization and globalization toward one world based on the post-modern consciousness. The term "post-modern" in international politics has been used for 10 years, which means a real turning point in history. It occurred a paradigm shift which established new order, especially affecting the relationships among the states on the earth.
Globalization or Internationalization in history means the challenge and conquest over the regulations and limits due to the differences of human beings, with negation of the universal human values. Internationalization ultimately aims at mutually beneficial life through sound competition, not at unlimited competition based on the principle of the survival of the fittest. Various form of life and values originated from the different national, cultural, regional and traditional bases should be respected in the open era. Here, internationalization rather than globalization is still in effect to human being who are living in this society.
Each nation and society should also be responsible for preserving life and nature in the internationalization era. Thus, "saving nature and preserving environment" is our ultimate value to pursue the coexistence of human with nature. Internationalization era requires us common responsibilities on international exchange for capital an4 information, restoring nature, respecting human rights, manifesting social justice, and finally establishing democracy.
In a word, nationalism, internationalism, or cosmopolitanism is not the issue on the zero-sum game, but the issue on the positive-sum game. It is the game for cooperation and coexistence in the real politics as our desperate task for the better life. In this opening process through internationalization and the post modern globalization with the coexistence of integration and differentiation, I can find the possibility for balancing change and sustainability in terms of the combination of individuality and universality.
The idea of internationalization does not deny the existence of various cultural communities and ought not to do so, either. It finally means open nationalism, which develops its own inherent nationality and unique culture without going against other nationalities. Nationalism and democracy as the universal values in the international era can meet each other at this point. As a conclusion, democracy containing the core idea of liberalism will open the new era of internationalization with nationalism.
