The purpose of this article is to analyze the aspects of Japanese Orientalism inherent in contemporary plays. The author defines Japanese Orientalism as the perception, gaze, and prejudices towards Koreans that are systematized with Japan at the center. With Park Geun-hyeong's play "All Soldiers Are Pitiful" selected as the research subject, the author discusses how Japanese Orientalism unfolds through the behavioral patterns of the characters. Among them, particular emphasis was placed on the analysis of the "Kamikaze" scene, where a direct mention of the Japanese evaluation of Koreans is made. In the play, Japan (Japanese) evaluates the characteristics of Koreans as "inferior and ignoble.“ The story focuses on the horrors of war, and the protagonist does not reject or resist the Japanese evaluation. Instead, the protagonist's suffering due to the brutal war evokes empathy and sympathy. Through the dramatic structure, readers who follow the protagonist's psyche become desensitized to the unjust evaluation imposed by the totalitarian state of Japan (Japanese) and accept it as it is. The unjust evaluation of Japanese people perceived in modern times has been influenced by history and various media, and this influence will continue in the future. Considering the continuous historical context, the adopted image of Koreans (People of Chosun Dynasty) is a factor that is difficult to escape from distorted misconceptions and perceptions. Writing that recognizes Japanese Orientalism will help dispel fixed thinking and misconceptions about Koreans, while also providing an opportunity for authors to break free from the homogeneous structure of ‘People of Chosun Dynasty’(Korean) characteristics and create new perspectives of Koreans.
