국립중앙박물관 국외전시의 경향 분석: 용산시기를 중심으로 = An Analysis of Trends in Overseas Exhibitions by the National Museum of Korea : With a Focus on the Yongsan Period

국문 초록 (Abstract)

국립중앙박물관 국외전시는 국가기관이 추진하는 정부사업이다. 그만큼 한국의 역사와 문화를 국외에 널리 알리고 국가 간 문화교류에 기여하는 것은 국외전시의 주요 목표가 되어 왔으며, 국가의 정치·외교적 정책 방향은 국외전시가 추진되는 과정에서 일정부분 영향을 미쳐왔다. 초기 국외전시는 ‘명품전’, ‘통사전’, ‘순회전’ 성격의 전시가 중심이 되었다. 그러나 국제적 환경변화에 맞춰 국외전시의 흐름도 변화하였으며, 2005년 용산시기를 맞이하여 국립박물관의 새로운 비전과 역할을 정립한 것은 중요한 전환점이 되었다.
용산시기에는 외국문화재 국내전시의 교환전시로 추진된 국외전시가 증가하였으며, 해외박물관 한국실 지원사업과 관련된 국외전시도 활성화되고 있다. 최근 국외전시에 대한 수요가 증가하면서 국외전시의 발전적 개최 방향에 대한 고민이 더욱 요구된다. 국외전시를 기획할 때는 먼저 전시 개최지의 상황에 맞춰 통사전과 주제전, 심화전 중 적절한 방식을 선택해야 한다. 또한, 개최기관과의 긴밀한 협의를 통해 전시주제, 전시구성, 전시품 등을 선정하고, 다양한 전달방식을 시도해 볼 수 있다. 과거와 현재의 한국을 시간적으로 연결하거나, 한국과 다른 국가를 공간적으로 연결하는 전시 역시 주목할 만하다. 특히 최근에는 한류에 대한 관심, IT강국인 한국의 디지털 콘텐츠에 대한 기대, 다양한 분야에서의 협력이 국외전시의 변화를 이끌고 있다. 이 과정에서 개최기관의 한국학 전공 전문인력의 확충과 이를 통한 전시개최기관과의 활발한 소통은 국외전시의 완성도를 높일 수 있는 중요한 요소이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The National Museum of Korea’s overseas exhibitions are the government-led initiatives managed by a national institution. As such, their primary objective is to widely promote Korea’s history and culture abroad. To Some extent, the political and diplomatic direction of Korea promotion of these overseas exhibitions. Early exhibitions focused on masterpiece chronological displays and touring exhibitions. However, the trends in overseas exhibitions have evolved in response to changing international circumstances. The museum’s relocation to its current site in Yongsan in 2005 marked a significant inflection point, enabling the museum to redefine its vision and role as a national institution.
During the Yongsan period, there has been an increase in overseas exhibitions organized as part of exchange agreements, that allowing Korea to showcase its cultural heritage abroad in return for hosting foreign cultural artifacts in domestic exhibitions. Additionally, exhibitions associated with the museum’s support program for Korean galleries in overseas museums have gained prominence. As the demand for overseas exhibitions continues to rise, there is an increasing need to explore innovative approaches to organizing these exhibitions.
When planning overseas exhibitions, it is crucial to tailor the approach to the specific circumstances of the host location by selecting the appropriate format, whether it be a chronological, thematic or in-depth exhibition. Close collaboration with host institutions is essential for determining exhibition themes, structures, and items, as well as for experimenting with diverse methods of content delivery. Exhibitions that bridge Korea’s past and present or create spatial connections between Korea and other countries also hold significant potential.
Recently, the rising global interest in Hallyu (Korean Wave), growing expectations for Korea’s digital content as an IT powerhouse, and increased cooperation across various fields have been key drivers of change in overseas exhibitions. In this context, expanding the number of specialists with expertise in Korean Studies at host institutions, thereby fostering active communication between organizers and host is essential for enhancing the quality and impact of these exhibitions.
