국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근에는 IT 기술, 센서, 조명, 예술이 결합된 미디어 파사드가 현대건축 외피 장식의 트렌드가 되어 근대 건축의 획일화된 그리드와 삭막한 도시를 감성적이고 개성 있는 얼굴들로 변모시켜 놓았다. 본 논문은 이런흐름 속에서 미디어 파사드의 화려하고 역동적인 디지털스킨이 현란한 디자인, 과잉광고의 스펙터클, 최첨단 영상기술의 효과를 실험하는 화려한 디스플레이로 전락하지 않고, 공공의 상호작용적 소통의 인터페이스가 될 수 있는가를 인간의 피부기능과 연관해 살펴보았다. 우선 디지털스킨의 생체모방적 특징을 기술 그 자체보다 인간과 기계의 공생, 기술 문화의 중요성을 강조한 시몽동(G. Simondon)의 기술철학을 매개로 메를로퐁티(M. Merleau-Ponty)의 생명체의 자기조절 질서와 지각적인 상징적 질서에 대한 현상학적 시각과 ‘심리적 싸개’로서 피부개념을 연구한 정신분석가 앙지외(D. Anzieu)의 관점에 근거해 탐문해 보았다. 나아가 건축외부와 내부의 경계에서 정보를 전달하는 디지털스킨이 진정한 소통의 공동체를 형성할 수 있는가를 메를로퐁티 ‘살’ 존재의 특징인 감각적 공통지대의 연결성을 통해 살펴보았다. 그 결과 현대건축의 미디어 파사드는 외부 자연환경에 반응하며 스스로 형태와 색이 변화해 다채로운 표피 디자인을 보여줄 뿐만 아니라, 거주민들의 몸짓과 감각적으로 상호작용하면서 메시지를 전달하는 소통의 인터페이스가 될 수 있음이 밝혀졌다. 그러나 진정한 사회적 소통의 장이 되기 위해서는 피부촉각에 반응하는 공감각적 소통은 유지하되 완전히 몰입하지 않는 거리를 통해 디지털스킨이 만들어 내는 빛의 이미지와 기호들을 사심 없는 반성적 시각으로 바라볼수 있는 미적 체험의 필요성이 요구됨이 드러났다. 그래야만 일방향의 환상적인 스펙터클을 제공하며 카니발적 도취만을 유도하는 미디어 스크린에 전적으로 몰입만 하는 체험과 거리를 유지할 수 있다. 요컨대 디지털스킨의 이미지와 기호들이 휘발성 강한 이벤트와 디지털 스트레스로 전락하지 않기 위해서는 감각적인 상호작용적 체험과 함께 지역민들을 참여, 결속시킬 수 있는 양질의 콘텐츠가 뉴미디어, 예술, 인문학 학제 간연구를 통해 지속적으로 개발되어야 한다. 게다가 디지털스킨은 감각적이면서도 순수한 미적 체험 외에 정보접근과 활용에 균등한 기회를 부여할 수 있어야 한다. 그 결과 현대건축은 단순히 거주 너머 소통의 인터페이 스이자 사회적 플랫폼이 되어 잠재적인 사회소통의 가치를 실현할 수 있다. 또한 몸의 공감각을 매개로 미디어 파사드와 상호작용하는 가운데 스마트폰으로 결핍된 감성적 커뮤니티의 결속감도 회복시켜 새로운 사회적‘살’ 공동체를 형성할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In recent times, the so-called “media facade” that combines information-technology (IT), sensors, lighting, and arts has emerged as a new trend in exterior decoration in contemporary architecture and has transformed the stereotyped grid and dreary urban cities in modern architecture into sentimental and originative ones. This paper has examined how, under these circumstances, the splendid and dynamic “digital skin” of “media facade” has been transformed into the interface of public interactive communications rather than being degraded into a brilliant display that experiments flash design, spectacles of exaggerated advertisements, and the effects of cutting-edge audiovisual technologies. First of all, this study has examined the characteristics of “digital skin” based on, first, Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenological view of self-controlling order and the perceptual, symbolic order of living things and, second, psychoanalyst Didier Anzieu’s view of the concept of “skin” as a psychological wrapper - with the philosophy of technology by Gilbert Simondon, who emphasized a symbiosis between man and machinery and the importance of technological culture, as a medium of reference. Furthermore, this study has figured out whether “digital skin” that transforms information in a boundary between the exterior and the interior can establish a community of genuine communications in relation to a sensual common zone which is characteristic of Merleau-Ponty’s idea of the existence of “skin.” As a result, this study has found that “media facade” of contemporary architecture not only shows diverse epidermal designs by reacting to the outside natural environment and by changing its patterns and colors by itself but also functions as an interface of communications that conveys messages by sensually interacting with the gestures of residents. The study also found that, in order for “media facade” to function as a field of social communications, it requires aesthetic experience with which it could reflectively face the images or symbols of light produced by “digital skin” by maintaining a distance with which it can sustain multisensory space - reacting to a sense of touch with skin - but cannot be absorbed in it. This is based on a conclusion that only then “media facade” can offer one-sided fantastic spectacles and maintain a distance with the experience of totally immersed in media screen that induces carnivalous absorption. In short, in order to prevent the images of symbols of “digital skin” from being degraded into volatile events and digital stresses, both “sensual and interactive experiences” and “quality contents” that can induce the participation of residents and consolidate them should be developed through interdisciplinary research among the studies of arts and humanities. Besides, “digital skin” should be given equal opportunities in terms of not only sensual and pure aesthetic experiences but also access to information and utilization. Then, contemporary architecture will develop into an interface of communications and social platforms beyond the meaning of residence and will be able to realize its value of social communications. Besides, “digital skin” can help create a new community of new social “flesh” by recovering the consolidation with the community of emotion - which lacks in the community of smartphones -- as it interacts with “media facade” through the medium of multisensory body.
