The followings are the results of epidemiologic study on visual acuity of 1,892 university entrants in 1978 (male, 1,538 persons ; female, 354 persons).
The visual acuity was measured using standard type visual acuity charts with Landolt ring designed by Han, Chun Suck, M. D. Levels of visual acuity evaluated by age, sex and college they had entered, and compared with these obtained from the entrants in 1977.
1. Number of students whose visual acuity of their naked eyes was normal amounted to 561 persons (36.5%) in respect of the right eyes and 557 persons (36.2%) in respect of the left eyes in the male students, and 133 persons (37.6%) in respect of the left eyes in the female students.
2. Number of students whose visual acuity was corrected amounted to 585 persons (38.0%) in the male students and 121 persons (34.2%) in the female students.
3. Number of students who had not corrected their vision even though their naked vision was less than 0.5 amounted to 222 persons (14.4%) in respect of the right eyes and 217 persons (14.1%) in respect of the left eyes in the male students, and 51 persons (43%) in respect of the right eyes and 49 persons (13.8%) in respect of the left eyes in the female students. It was noteworthy that number of students who had not corrected their vision even though their naked vision was less than 0.1 amounted to 16 persons (1.0%) in respect of the right eyes and 8 persons (0.5%) in respect of the left eyes in the male students, and 3 persons (0.8%) only in respect of the right eyes in the female students.
4. Number of students with normal vision above 1.0 either naked or corrected amounted to 841 persons (54.2%) in respect of the right eyes and 850 persons (954.2%) in respects of the left eyes in the male students, and 175 persons (49.5%) in respect of the right eyes and 170 persons (48.0%) in respect of the left eyes in the female students.
5. Number of students whose vision was subnormal below 1.0 although they had their visions corrected amounted to 305 persons (29.8%) in respect of the right eyes and 292 persons (19.0%) in respect of left eyes in the male students and 79 persons (22.3%) in respect of the right eyes, and 77 persons (21.7%) in respect of the left eyes in the female students. A particular attention should be paid to the fact that the number of students whose corrected vision was either below 0.5 or below 0.1 amounted to 76 persons(4.9%) and 5 persons (0.3%) in respect of the right eyes and 86 persons (5.6%) and 5 persons(0.3%) in respect of the left eyes, respectively, in the male students, and in the female students none of them had the corrected vision below 0.1 but those whose corrected vision below 0.5 amounted to 21 persons (5.9%) both in respect of the right and left eyes.
6. There was significant difference in the visual among students according to college they had entered. There was a tendency that the vision was worse amoung students whose college entrance competition was known to be tougher than others.
7. Differences in number of students with normal visual acuity of their naked eyes were noted according to their age, showing the lowest value at 19 years of age in the male students and 18 years of age in the female students. The reason for this fact can not be clearly explained yet, whether this was attributed merely to sampling error or to some specific factors and further investigation should be carried out.
8. Visual acuity of the university entrants in 1978 classified according to college they had entered and to their age became significantly worse when compared to the similar data obtained in 1977.
The above results suggest that the guidence for the proper manner of study and health education concerning the conservation of vision are urgently needed for high school students especially for those who are preparing themselves for the entrance examination to college.
