Like many of his poems, "This Lime-Tree Bower My Prison" grew out of an interpenetration of reading and personal relationships. What the poet offers as a spontaneous monologue of immediate experience is informed by personal history and shaped by a significant literary consciousness. Though the poem has never lacked admirers neither the extent of the personal experience involved nor the context of literary influence discernable in its language has been adequately described.
The poem was dedicated and parts of it addressed to Lamb, whom Coleridge in 1796 called his "dearest friend." So in this context Lambs relationship with Coleridge will be discussed at first. And then I will interpret the poem in relation to the literary tradition.
According to Reeve Parker, the salient text in that tradition is Richard Baxter's The Saints' Everlasting Rest. My guess is that Coleridge knew this treatise well in 1796 when Lamb suffered his calamity and that Baxter's formulations and examples of the art of Christian meditation, or ones very like his, were centrally operative in Coleridge's imagination when he addressed himself to his friend, both in the letter Lamb treasured and in the poem that finally exasperated him. What follows is in part an attempt to supply the ground on which this conjecture is based and to anticipate its problematic aspects. But, more important, the notion that Coleridge was offering Lamb (and himself) a consolation based in essentially Christian tradition can be used to frame an interpretation of the analogical nature of Coleridge's poetic mind.
The crucial premise in his theory of meditation is one that puts him in the position of reaching back to medieval assumptions about religious correspondences and forward to some modern symbolist claims, the premise that natural phenomena and the human intellect are analogues of each other. Both mind and nature are symbols, consubstantial in their manifestation of the creative energy of God
