According to Sam-Kuk Sa Ki(The History of Three Countries), the country Baekche was the most active in constructing the fortresses, and the local administrative district was composed of fortress systems with 200 fortresses, most ofwhich were minly constructed as mountain fortress. The fact that the small sized Baekche fortresses in Baekche is similar to the fortress construction in Bu-Yeo. This reflects that some of Bu-Yeo's tradition is maintained in Baekche's construction technique. Until recently, build a stone fortress has been considered as constructed in the late sixth century. However, Seol-Bong fortress and Ban-Wol fortress were possibly constructed from the late forth century to the late fifth century. This shows that stone-walled fortress had already been constructed during the Han-Sung dynasty. The construction period of Dae-Mo fortress also needs to be re-examined, for the fortress remains are similar to that constructed in the mid-fifth century of Baekche. Regarding Gye-Jok fortress, the estimation that the fortress was constructed in the early fifth century, was found to be true with the excavation of Baeche's necked jar(圓底短頸壺). This jar, possibly made between the late forth and the early fifth century, was found in the foundation layer of the inner southern gate. For further research, the charcoal sample ore, which was collected from the old earth's surface of the northern wall during the first excavation period, was entrusted to the Beta Research Center in the United States. According to the radiocarbon dating measurement, the ore was probably made on the year of 415. Wol-Pyong-Dong fortress might have been first constructed in the late fifth century, but it is probable that the construction period might date further back, for the remains excavated from that fortress such as bird leg figures(鳥足紋) jar, proves that the fortress could have been built during or before the period when Woong-Jin was the capital of Baekche. The construction of Baekche's stone-walled fortress between the late forth and early fifth century on the borderline, could also be seen as the result of the territorial expansion of the King Keun-Cho-Go(近肖古王). Here are the most common methods in forming the fortress's foundation layer. First, the ground is dug until the base rock or the weathered base rock is exposed, and then the fortress is built on the exposed surface. A slope on the surface is either made even by shaving the surface like a stairway, and then by putting the foundation rock over it; or the base rock layer with clay, send, or stones of all sizes is hardened and that hardened surface is used as the foundation layer. If the base rock is used as the foundation layer, a hump is made on the upper layer of the base rock in order to prevent the foundation rock from being shoved. This technique which can be found in Sul-Bong fortress and Gye-Jok fortress, was first used in constructing the fortresses during the period of Goguryo. After forming the foundation layer, two or three layers of clay and earth were supplemented, or flat rock was paved on the foundation layer with the width of 30㎝~80㎝. These more developed methods were used in order to protect the foundation of the fortress, and are found in Im-Jon fortress and Gye-Jok fortress. In building the fortress wall, the rectangular stones were piled up in the shape of “品”. here are two of the ways to pile up the stones. The first method is a vertical construction, by piling two or three layers of rectangular stones, and then putting two layers of long flat stones or one layer of squares stones. The second method is constructing the wall with the trimmed stone of granite horizontally with the outer wall of the fortress itself. But usually, most of the fortresses were constructed by piling up the rectangular stones both crosswide and lengthwide, and crevices between the stones were mostly filed up with Geurangi-building, and wedge stones were not used m
