역사적 사고는 어떻게 함양해야 할까? – 미국 교육과정 자료의 역사적 사고 교수･학습 설계 분석 – = How do We Promote Historical Thinking?: Historical Thinking Progression Designs in World History Curriculum Materials

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구에서는 미국 중등교육 현장에서 널리 사용되며 역사적 사고의 교수･학습에 긍정적인 효과를 보고한 세 가지 교육과정 자료를 분석하였다. 분석 대상은 디지털 탐구 그룹의 《역사가처럼 읽기》, 미시간 대학교의 《읽기, 탐구하기, 쓰기》, 그리고 공개교육자료 프로젝트의 《세계사 프로젝트》이다. 이 연구는 두 단계로 나뉘어 진행되었다. 첫 번째 단계에서는 각 교육과정 자료에 반영된 역사적 사고를 분석하였고, 두 번째 단계에서는 역사적 사고의 진전을 위한 교수･학습 설계를 분석하였다.
역사적 사고 분석 결과, 세 가지 교육과정 자료에서 강조하는 역사적 사고가 서로 다름을 확인할 수 있었다. 《역사가처럼 읽기》는 사료 읽기를 강조하며 ‘출처 확인’, ‘맥락화’, ‘교차 검토’, ‘자세히 읽기’를 중시하였다. 《읽기, 탐구하기, 쓰기》는 역사 질문에 답하기 위해 사료를 읽고, 추론하고, 주장을 서술하는 종합적인 과정으로서 역사 논증을 강조하며, 역사적 사고의 하위 범주는 따로 제시하지 않았다. 《세계사 프로젝트》는 사료 읽기에 초점을 둔 ‘출처 확인’, ‘맥락화’와 함께 2차 개념으로 분류되는 ‘인과’, ‘논증’, ‘비교’, ‘연속성과 변화’라는 6가지 인지 활동을 역사적 사고로 제시하였다. 이러한 차이는 연구 개발진의 학문적 배경, 연구자로서의 훈련 과정, 연구 및 교수･학습 환경 등의 복합적인 영향에서 비롯되었다. 각 교육과정 자료에서 강조하는 역사적 사고의 차이는 역사적 사고의 교수･학습 설계의 차이로 이어졌다. 《역사가처럼 읽기》는 독립적 반복형 접근을, 《읽기, 탐구하기, 쓰기》는 확장적 나선형 접근을, 《세계사 프로젝트》는 중층적 단계형 접근을 취했다. 분석 결과를 바탕으로 우리나라 역사적 사고 교수･학습 설계 및 실천에 대한 시사점을 모색하였다.

This study analyzes historical thinking and the design of teaching and learning historical thinking as presented in three widely used curriculum materials in the US. The curriculum materials analyzed are Reading Like a Historian by the Digital Inquiry Group, Read.Inquire.Write by the University of Michigan, and the World History Project by the Open Educational Resources Project. The three have reported effectiveness in teaching and learning historical thinking, The analysis was conducted in two stages: first, the historical thinking reflected in the three curriculum materials was analyzed, and then the design for historical thinking progression was examined.
The analysis revealed differences in historical thinking across the three curriculum materials. Reading Like a Historian emphasizes reading primary sources, focusing on ‘sourcing,’ ‘contextualization,’ ‘corroboration,’ and ‘close reading.' Read. Inquire.Write. emphasizes a comprehensive process of historical argumentation, involving reading primary sources, drawing reasoning, and articulating arguments to answer historical questions, without presenting subcategories of historical thinking separately. World History Project presents six cognitive activities as historical thinking, including ‘sourcing,’ ‘contextualization,’ and second–order concepts commonly classified as ‘causation,’ ‘argumentation,’ ‘comparison,’ and ‘continuity and change.’ These differences are attributed to the complex influences of the academic backgrounds, research training, and research and teaching environments of the development teams. The variations in historical thinking led to differences in the design of teaching and learning historical thinking. Reading Like a Historian adopts an independent repetitive approach, Read.Inquire.Write. employs an expansive spiral approach, and the World History Project utilizes a layered stepwise approach. Based on the analysis results, implications for the design and practice of teaching and learning historical thinking in South Korea were explored.
