The modern drama exchange between Korea and Japan began with an exchange between the JAYU Theatre Company (Korea) and the SUBARU Theatre Company (Japan) in 1979. This paper examines the modern drama exchange between Korea and Japan from1960 until 1979. The modern drama exchange started in the 1960`s and was included in a more wide-ranging intergovernmental cultural exchange. There was little exchange between the theatre companies of the Korea and Japan. There were no diplomatic relations between (South) Korea and Japan until 1965. A free civil exchange could not be executed easily. However, information was constantly exchanged through theatre practitioners between the two countries. During this time the Korean youth theatre group ``Little Birds`` visited and performed in Japan several times between 1963 and 1965, starting the first modern drama exchange. However, a wide ranging exchange was not possible at that time. In the 1970s some Japanese theatre companies began performing particular Korean dramas on stage. This was the result of the Japanese paying attention to the political situation in the South Korea. Interest in the ``JAINICHI`` community rose at this time and works focusing on the ``JAINICHI`` began to be produced. This remarkable trend continued from 1972 until 1982. However, these productions failed to examine South Korea as a whole and only focussed on the political situation. The trend in Korean theatre was to examine and understand the ``military dictatorship`` and the ``divided nation``. The FUJI theatre company performed ``The Hill Where Balsam Blooms`` in 1979. This is a drama concerning a Japanese woman who devoted her life to looking after South Korean orphans until she died. This production was considered to be a "moving story" by Koreans and Japanese alike. The Korean media highlighted the use of Korean actors in this Japanese production and the singing of ``The Balsam`` in Korean. ``The Balsam`` is a song that was banned during the Japanese colonization of Korea. The FUJI theatre company claimed that the performance was a big success and hoped to perform in Korea. However, that was not possible, as at that time it was difficult for Japanese theatre companies to perform in Korea. The drama exchange between the JAYU theatre company (Korea) and the SUBARU theatre company (Japan) began with a suggestion from the Korean company to start invitation/visiting performances. This led to a dispute in Korea over whether Japanese culture should be allowed into Korea. After consideirng this reaction SUBARU presented "Deep Blue Sea" (by Terence Rattigan) as their performance in Korea. JAYU introduced the first contemporary Korean theatre production into Japan. Their performance ``What will become of you?`` was based on Korean folk tales. The South Korean society and media considered this is drama exchange based on mutual invitation to be a great success.
