브뤼기에르 신부 서한 연구 - 페낭과 방콕에서 보낸 서한

국문 초록 (Abstract)

페낭과 방콕에서 보낸 브뤼기에르 신부의 서한 연구는 파리외방전교회소속 선교사 브뤼기에르라는 인물이 교황청 포교성성과 파리외방전교회의 조선 선교에 관한 교섭 과정에서 파리외방전교회의 조선 선교에 적극적 역할을 주문함으로써 조선 선교에 긍정적 결실을 가져오는 역할을 했다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 1831년 조선 대목구장으로 임명되고, 조선입국을 시도했지만 마찌아즈에서 선종한 인물이라는 점에서 브뤼기에르의 선교 여정이 한국교회의 입장에서도 연구적 관심을 가지는 의미라고 할 수 있다. 다만 조선 대목구장으로 임명 되기 전 페낭에서 샴으로 가는 선교 여정에 대한 관심은 소외되었으나, 1827년 브뤼기에르 신부가 쓴 3편의 서한을 통해 그 선교 여정과 서한의 정보에 대한 연구를 할 수 있었다.
1827년 2월 4일 서한은 브뤼기에르 신부가 마카오에서 출발해 페낭에 도착한 후에 파리외방전교회본부 총장 랑글루아 신부에게 보낸 선교사 보고 서한으로서 페낭을 떠나 방콕으로 갈 것이며, 선교 여행의 예상 경로를 보고하고, 샴 교구의 선교사가 턱없이 부족한 상황, 또한 아시아의 정치적 상황과 박해의 상황등을 전달하는 서한으로 분석된다. 1827년 2월 6일 서한은 페낭에 도착한 브뤼기에르 신부가 본인이 가르치던 카르카손 대신학생들에게 보낸 서한으로 페코 신부의 죽음으로 자신의 선교지가 코친차이나에서 샴 교구로 변경되었고, 선교사가 참으로 부족한 선교지의 상황을 설명하면서 선교사의 삶을 지원해 줄 것을 간청하는 서한으로 분석된다. 또한 1827년 6월 10일 서한은 샴 제국의 수도이자 샴 교구의 중심인 방콕에 도착해 파리외방전교회 총장 랑글루아 신부에게 보낸 보고 서한으로 실제 페낭에서 방콕까지의 선교 일정과 케다와 탈롱에서의 사건들, 리고르왕과의 만남 등을 전하는 서한으로 분석되었다.
이 3편의 브뤼기에르 신부의 서한들을 분석하고 이 서한들에 담긴 중요주제 3가지를 발견했다. 먼저 서한들은 브뤼기에르 신부의 초기 선교 여정에 대한 자세한 정보를 제공해 준다. 마카오를 떠나 페낭섬에 도착한 사실을 확인할 수 있고, 브뤼기에르 신부의 선교지가 코친차이나에서 샴 교구의 방콕으로 변경된 과정들을 확인할 수 있다. 또한 예상 선교 여정과는 다른 실제 페낭에서 방콕까지의 선교 여정지를 정확하게 확인할 수 있다. 수마트라 섬의 아셈, 페낭 북부 케다, 탈롱, 방콕항으로 이어지는 실제 선교 여정이 드러났다. 두 번째는 2월 4일 서한을 통해서 브뤼기에르 신부는 조선교회의 존재와 조선 선교에 대한 필요성을 인식하고 있었다는 사실을 정확하게 드러내고 있다. 그래서 적어도 1827년 2월 4일 이전에 브뤼기에르 신부는 조선교회의 선교상황에 대한 인식과 선교사를 파견해야 하는 필요성에 공감하는 인식을 가지고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 셋째로 말레이시아 선교 여정을 이어가면서 계속해서 랑글루아 신부와 카르카손 대신학생들을 대상으로 선교사 요청과 선교사의 삶을 지원하기를 바라는 내용이 서한들에 담겨있다. 이 서한들에 중요하게 나타나는 중요 주제로 브뤼기에르 신부의 아시아 선교사 요청을 찾아낼 수 있었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

A study of Father Bruguière’s letters sent from Penang and Bangkok shows that a missionary from the Paris Foreign Mission Society called Bruguière requested an active role in the Paris Foreign Mission Society’s mission to Korea during the negotiations with the Holy See and the Paris Foreign Mission Society’s mission to Korea. By doing so, it was confirmed that it played a role in bringing positive results to the Joseon mission. In addition, in that he was appointed as the Archbishop of Joseon in 1831 and attempted to enter Joseon, but died in Mazziaz, Bruguière’s missionary journey can be said to be of research interest from the perspective of the Korean Church. However, before being appointed as Archbishop of Joseon, interest in the missionary journey from Penang to Siam was neglected, but it was possible to study the missionary journey and the information in the letters through three letters written by Father Bruguiere in 1827.
The letter dated February 4, 1827 is a missionary report letter sent by Father Bruguière to Father Langlois, president of the Paris Foreign Mission Society headquarters, after he departed from Macau and arrived in Penang, reporting that he would leave Penang and go to Bangkok and the expected route of the missionary trip. , it is analyzed as a letter conveying the severe shortage of missionaries in the Diocese of Siam, as well as the political situation and persecution in Asia. The letter dated February 6, 1827, was sent by Father Bruguiere, who had arrived in Penang, to the Carcassonne students he was teaching. Due to the death of Father Peko, his mission field was changed from Cochinchina to the Diocese of Siam, and the mission field was severely lacking in missionaries. It is analyzed as a letter explaining the situation and pleading for support for the life of a missionary. In addition, the letter of June 10, 1827 was a report letter sent to Father Langlois, president of the Paris Foreign Missions Society, on arrival in Bangkok, the capital of the Siamese Empire and the center of the Diocese of Siam, detailing the actual missionary schedule from Penang to Bangkok and events in Kedah and Tallong. , was analyzed as a letter conveying a meeting with King Ligor, etc.
We analyzed these three letters of Father Bruguière and discovered three important themes contained in these letters. First, the letters provide detailed information about Father Bruguière’s early missionary journey. You can confirm that he left Macau and arrived on Penang Island, and you can see the process by which Father Bruguiere’s mission field was changed from Cochinchina to Bangkok in the Diocese of Siam. Additionally, you can accurately check the actual mission itinerary from Penang to Bangkok, which is different from the expected mission itinerary. The actual missionary journey to Asem on Sumatra Island, Kedah, north of Penang, Tallong, and Bangkok Port was revealed. Second, through the letter of February 4, Father Bruguiere accurately reveals the fact that he was aware of the existence of the Korean Church and the need for missionary work in Korea. So, it can be confirmed that at least before February 4, 1827, Father Bruguiere had an awareness of the missionary situation of the Korean Church and an understanding of the need to dispatch missionaries. Thirdly, the letters contain a request for missionaries and a hope that they will continue to support the lives of missionaries to Father Langlois and Carcassonne students as they continue their missionary journey in Malaysia. It was possible to identify Father Bruguiere’s request for missionaries to Asia as an important theme appearing in these letters.
