입원노인과 재가노인의 수면양상, 수면만족도 및 수면증진행위 비교연구 = Comparison Study on the sleep patterns, satisfaction of sleep and sleep enhancement behaviors between hospitalized elderly patients and non-hospitalized elderly

The purposes of this study were comparing and analyzing sleep patterns, satisfaction of sleep and sleep enhancement behaviors between hospitalized elderly patients and non-hospitalized elderly, in order to provide basic data for effective nursing interventions for the elderly with sleep disturbances.
The subjects of this study were 201 persons over 65 years, who were hospitalized patients or community living in U-city, Gyung-gi province, and data were collected from Jun. 10. 2007. to Aug. 25. 2007. Analyses of the data were done by the X2-test, t/F test, ANCOVA, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, Duncan, using SAS program.
The results are as follows.
1) After identifying differences in sleep patterns, satisfaction of sleep and sleep enhancement behaviors (presence or absence of spouses were processed by ANCOVA), there were a little high sleep patterns in non-hospitalized elderly than hospitalized elderly patients.
2) As a result of analyzing correlations among sleep patterns, satisfaction of sleep and sleep enhancement behaviors, there were strong correlation between sleep patterns and satisfaction of sleep in both groups. The better sleep patterns they had, the more sleep satisfaction they had. But there were no correlations between sleep patterns and sleep enhancement behaviors and between satisfaction of sleep and sleep enhancement behaviors.
3) When comparing differences among general characteristics in hospitalized elderly, significant differences of sleep patterns and satisfaction of sleep were directly related to monthly allowance.
4) As for comparing differences among general characteristics in non-hospitalized elderly, sleep patterns are affected by presence or absence of spouses and so satisfaction of sleep by family types respectively. Sleep enhancement behaviors are related with age, religions, monthly allowance and sponsors.
In conclusion, though sleep patterns, satisfaction of sleep and sleep enhancement behaviors might vary with environmental factors or physical and psychological status, there were no relations or poor relationships among three tools in this study. Therefore it was presumed that changes of sleep patterns in elderly could not be modified.
To relieve sleep disturbances in elderly, comprehension of sleep of aged by nursing care givers (family members or nurses) must precede all others. And then improving environments (families or hospitals) and promoting elderly's self-esteem through religious considerations and preparation of financial conditions should follow.
