동기면담 프로그램의 중독개입효과에 대한 메타분석 = A Meta-Analysis on the Effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing Programs in Addiction Intervention

Purpose This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing (MI) programs in reducing addictive behaviors and to identify effects according to type (alcohol, smoking, and digital addiction) and intervention session length. In particular, this study reevaluates the applicability of MI within the context of addiction research in Korea and provides practical implications in response to the growing prevalence of digital addiction. Methods A meta-analysis was conducted using 13 domestic research articles on MI-based addiction interventions. A total of 41 standardized mean differences (SMDs) were extracted and analyzed using a random-effects model. Subgroup analyses were performed on addiction type and number of sessions, and the validity of the results was examined through heterogeneity and publication bias assessments. Results The overall effect size of MI was SMD=0.79, indicating a moderate-to-large significant impact on reducing addictive behaviors. The greatest effect was observed in digital addiction interventions, followed by smoking interventions, while a limited effect was found in alcohol addiction studies. Additionally, interventions consisting of 4-8 sessions demonstrated a markedly higher effectiveness, whereas interventions with more than 12 sessions showed a diminishing effect. These findings suggest that MI outcomes vary depending on participant characteristics and intervention intensity. Conclusion MI is an effective, motivation-enhancing intervention for reducing addictive behaviors, with particularly strong applicability to digital addiction and adolescent populations. Session structure emerged as a critical determinant of effectiveness; therefore, future intervention programs should adopt tailored approaches based on addiction type, client characteristics, and intervention intensity. This study contributes to the expansion of evidence-based practices for addiction treatment in Korea.
