The decorations which appear in Buddhist art are yeonhwamun (lotus design 蓮華文), dangchomum (arabesque design 唐草文), boju-yeonhwamun (gem (cinatamni) and lotus design 寶珠蓮華文), kwareommuf (flame design 火焰文), yeonjumun (round gem design 連珠文), kwangmangmun (light-beam design 光芒文), geochimun (saw -toothed design 鋸齒文), wonmun (circle design 圓文) and pahyeongmun (whirl design 巴形文). Ordinarily these Buddhistic patterns regarded as those meaning the auspicious signs of Buddhism and representing the Buddha's world, In this respect, these indicated the good omen of immortal's world in East Asia before the introduction of Buddhists.
Nonetheless, after concentrating only on the Buddhistic aspects of the decorations, these can be summarized as below in their roles and symbols.
First of all, the above mentioned ornaments which appear in Buddhist art are nor for mere decorative purpose but rather they express and deliver the Buddhistic spirit of lotus-born(蓮華化生). All the designs have in common the basic idea or concept of lotus-born. Thus, the patterns are easily concerted and normally appear together. Secondly, in representing the lotus-born each of the decorations share same importance and contribution, so they can even be mutually exchanged.
Thirdly, in most cases, the outer appearances of the designs are not clearly distinguished. This is because each of them in its own aspect show the actions of lotusborn, and because they mutually exchangeable. A clear and definite distinction was not essential. People of the time considered and concentrated on that these patterns are the ornate designs of Buddha's world described through lotus-born. They were not keen about the terms, names or styles of such designs. Consequently, the terms especially indongmun and yeonhwamun(lotus design 蓮華文) are those we have invented for the sake of convenience.
Fuethermore, regarcless to the controversy of hether the origin of the designs is the East Asia before the transmission of Buddhism or the West, if the designs can be classified as designs of Buddhist art, then they can be interpreted as significant ingredients symbolizing the lotus-born.
In conclusion, from onwards it is recommendable to regard the designs of Buddhist art inclusively and comprehensively in relation to lotus-born rather than examining them separately and individaully as pure ornamentation.
