코로나19 시기를 살아가는 방과 후 강사의 삶의 경험: 예술기반 내러티브 탐구 = The Life Experience of an After-School Instructor During the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Art-Based Narrative Inquiry

Objectives The aim of this study was to gain an understanding of the life experiences of an after-school instructor living in a social crisis situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and explore the meanings of the life experiences. The participant was a woman in her late 40s working as an after-school instructor at an elementary school.
Methods Data collection was carried out for about 3 months from September to December, 2020, and the collected field texts included interview data from in-depth interviews conducted in conjunction with art making activities, observations, field notes, the researcher's journal, and artworks. Data analysis was performed according to the narrative inquiry procedure proposed. Based on the field texts, research texts were constructed using the three-dimensional space narrative inquiry framework consisting of temporality, sociality, and place.
Results Through the analysis of the life experience stories of the participant, four themes of the stories were identified as follows: ‘Leaving the life as a full-time housewife to step out into the world’, ‘The light and shadows in the life of an after-school instructor’, ‘Anxiety about job loss haunts me more than the fear of the coronavirus’, and ‘Another process of preparations to start afresh.’ Based on them, three meanings of the life experiences of the participant were derived as follows: ‘Reasons I live as an after-school instructor despite all the difficulties’, ‘A crisis turned into an opportunity for my growth’, and ‘Paintings have become a space for empathy and communication.’ Conclusions Based on the above analysis results, the meanings of the life experiences of an after-school instructor living through the COVID-19 pandemic were derived in the contexts of personal, practical and social justifications. First, the researcher and the participant explored their identities and the meanings of their work through confronting the life of an after-school instructor. Second, the experiences of painting pictures and art making became a new link of communication and relationship expansion, and the responsive art of the researcher was found to have a value as a tool for empathy. Third, through the process of art therapy, the researcher and the participant realized that there is a need for a social support system to address the problem of employment instability of after-school instructors.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

목적 본 연구는 코로나-19라는 사회적 위기 상황에서 살아가는 방과 후 강사의 삶에 대한 경험과 의미를 이해하기 위해 예술기반내러티브 탐구를 수행하였다.
방법 연구 참여자는 40대 후반의 여성으로 초등학교 방과 후 강사이며, 2020년 9월부터 12월까지 약 3개월 동안 미술작업을 병행한 심층면담을 통하여 면담내용과 관찰, 현장 노트, 연구 일지, 미술작품 등을 현장 텍스트로 수집하였다. 자료의 분석은 내러티브탐구의 절차에 따라 수행되었으며, 현장텍스트를 바탕으로 시간성, 사회성, 장소를 의미하는 3차원적 내러티브 탐구 공간을 염두에두고 연구텍스트를 작성하였다.
결과 본 연구에 나타난 방과 후 강사의 삶의 경험 이야기는 ‘전업주부에서 세상 밖으로 나오다’, ‘방과 후 강사의 명암(明暗)’, ‘코로나보다 실직이 더 무서워요’, ‘또 다른 준비’의 4가지 이야기로 구성되었다. 이를 바탕으로 한 방과 후 강사의 삶의 경험의 의미는 ‘그럼에도 불구하고 방과 후 강사로 사는 이유’, ‘위기는 기회가 되어 나를 성장 시키다’, ‘그림은 공감과 소통의 공간이 되다’로 3가지로 도출되었다.
결론 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 코로나-19 시기를 살아가는 방과 후 강사의 삶의 경험을 개인적, 실제적, 사회적 정당성의 맥락에서연구결과를 논의하였다. 첫째, 연구자와 연구 참여자는 방과 후 강사의 삶을 마주하며, 자신과 일에 대한 정체성을 찾아나갔다. 둘째, 그림과 미술작업 경험은 소통과 관계 확장의 새로운 연결고리가 되었고, 연구자의 반응작업은 공감의 도구로서 가치가 있었다. 셋째, 방과 후 강사의 고용 불안을 해결하기 위한 사회적 지원제도의 필요성에 대해 인식하였다.
