여강서원과 호계서원의 상량문 = Eulogies to Raising Beam Ceremonies of Yŏgangsŏwŏn and Hogyesŏwŏn

In the spring of 1574, a hermit scholar, Kwŏn Homun, a disciple of Yi Hwang, composed “Yŏgangsŏwŏn myŏngnyundang sangnyangmun [The Eulogy to the Raising Beam Ceremony of Myŏngnyundang Lecture Hall]” to present the educational goals of the Sŏwŏn [academy]. These goals were rooted in the idea of self-cultivation, based on the Zhang Shi and Zhu Xi’s idea for education system in academies, and teachings in Yi Hwang’s “Isansŏwŏn'gi [The Note on Isansŏwŏn].” When Yŏgangsŏwŏn was rebuilt in 1606, Andong Pusa [magistrate] Kim Rŭk and Yi Hwang’s disciple-to-disciple, Pae Yonggil, composed “Chondosa igŏn sangnyangmun [The Eulogy to the Moving Ceremony of Chondosa Shrine].” Kim Rŭk emphasized the sponsorship of the government office, while Pae Yonggil highlighted the importance of Ryu Sŏngnyong and Kwŏn Ch'ullan. It is likely that Kim’s eulogy was selected for the actual ceremony. Additionally, Chŏng Sasin, a disciple of Ku Pongnyŏng, composed “Yŏgangsŏwŏn yanghoru chungsu sangnyangmun [The Eulogy to the Rebuilding Ceremony of Yanghoru Pavilion]”, expressing a wish that the students would cultivate the spirit of greatness to achieve sageliness within and kingliness without. It is assumed that several buildings were rebuilt after Yŏgangsŏwŏn was bestowed the signboard of “Hogye”, though no relevant eulogies have been found. It is possible that the rebuilding and ritual were not carried out normally during the pyŏnghosibi [The Dispute between Pyŏngsansŏwŏn and Hogyesŏwŏn]. In the 2010s, Hogyesŏwŏn was restored within the precincts of the Korean Studies Institute, and Yi Sangjŏng was additionally enshrined. In October 2018, Kim Ch'anghoe from Andong composed “Chondosa sangnyangmun”, and in May 2020, Ryu Changhae from Chŏnju composed “Yanghoru sangnyangmun.” The eulogies of Yŏgangsŏwŏn and those following the relocation of Hogyesŏwŏn have faithfully reconfirmed the educational ideology of the sŏwŏn, as presented by Yi Hwang.
