Cognitive control is necessary to inhibit our habitual response or prepotent processing which is not relevant to targeted response for efficient cognitive processing such as goal-oriented behavior. Bilingual speakers who can use two languages in everyday life can be an expert to control and manage two languages compared with monolingual speakers, because the bilinguals always use two languages for a long time. Many previous studies suggested that increased cognitive demanding related to language control in bilingual speakers leads to the enhanced cognitive control and that these enhanced skills are utilized in performing non-linguistic switching tasks. However, recently opposite results have been reported, which is that bilinguals’ experience using two languages affect only ability of bilingual language control, but it is not extend into general cognitive domain. These contradicting evidences have been still reported and the issue is being magnified as a new controversy to prove mechanism of cognitive control in bilingualism.
In addition, previous studies were reported that there were different patterns to perform cognitive control between high and low proficient bilinguals. However, these previous studies did not investigate high and low proficient bilinguals together as one research with well-controlled bilingual speaker. Because of this reason, it was difficult to directly compare their performance of cognitive control between two proficient bilingual groups. Therefore, Study 1 had respectively recruited high proficient and low proficient bilinguals (Korean-English) with large sample size (N=145), which is sharing same Korean culture and homogenous educational background. The Study 1 investigated whether high proficient bilinguals use different strategy of cognitive control compared with low proficient bilingual to perform both linguistic and non-linguistic switching task. In addition, the Study 1 also calculated the correlation of switch costs between two switching tasks in each high and low proficient bilingual group to prove whether the bilingual language control is related with the general executive control not only in whole bilinguals, but also in each bilingual group.
On the other hand, only few studies investigated bilingual brain activity and behavior together by synthesizing multi-modal data such as behavior data, brain function and structural imaging. However, we need an integrated approach to study the brain-behavior relationship to understand mechanism of cognitive control in bilinguals. For the Study 2, therefore, brain structural and functional differences were compared between high proficient and low proficient bilinguals using multi-modal imaging technic, which is voxel based morphometry (VBM), tract-based statistics (TBSS) and seed-to-voxel analysis with resting-state fMRI. The Study 2 investigated whether second language (L2) proficiency induces brain structural changes not only in grey matter volumes but also white matter integrity. Moreover, the Study 2 also explored which brain regions are functionally connected to seed regions in rest-state, in which grey matter volumes were significantly different between high proficient and low proficient bilingual group in VBM result, and investigated whether the rest-state functional connectivity with seed region is different according to L2 proficiency.
The Study 1 was a behavioral study to examined bilinguals’ performance of a language switching task and a manual response-switching task with a large sample (N=63 for high proficiency, N=82 for low proficiency) of homogeneous sample of bilingual speakers (Korean-English). This behavior study found that the high proficient bilinguals applied different strategy to employ inhibitory mechanism between the linguistic and non-linguistic switching task. The low proficient bilinguals, however, showed identical pattern of cognitive control in both two tasks. These differences between two bilingual groups are caused by enhanced automatic processing of L2 speaking in the high proficient group, but the higher L2 proficiency did not provide any advantage for performing cognitive control. Moreover, this study demonstrated that the high-conflict bilingual language control was not extended into general domain of executive control regardless L2 proficient bilingual group.
In the Study 2, eighty-four bilinguals (N=38 for high proficiency and N=46 for low proficiency) among 145 Korean-English bilinguals in the Study 1 were participated. The Study 2 found that grey matter volumes in bilateral caudate were raised by increasing second language (L2) proficiency. The high proficient bilinguals showed the decreased fractional anisotropies (FA) and increased radial diffusivity (RD) in corpus callosum and left poster interior capsules. Besides, the low proficient bilinguals presented larger deactivating default mode network (DMN) connected with bilateral caudate and larger magnitude of positive correlation between left and right caudate. The high proficient bilingual showed a strongly active connectivity between right caudate and left prefrontal lobe, but the low proficient bilinguals had a deactivated connectivity between those regions. These results showed that the neural mechanisms for bilingual plasticity are different according to L2 proficiency in both brain structure and functional network in resting-state.
In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that bilinguals have different mechanisms for performing cognitive control task only for language domain, and they also have different neuronal mechanism for brain structure and function according to L2 proficiency.
이와 관련하여, 연구 2에서는 이중언어 숙련자와 비숙련자 집단 간의 대뇌 구조와 기능적인 차이를 비교하는 연구를 다중-모달 이미징 기법(voxel based morphometry : VBM, tract-based statistics : TBSS, seed-to-voxel analysis with resting-state fMRI) 을 통해 진행하였다.
