實存分析的 精神治療法으로서의 로고쎄라피(LOGOTHERAPY) = Logotherapy as an Existential Psychotherapy

Logotherapy, or existential analysis (Existenzanalyse) as it also has been called by its founder, Viktor E. Frankl of Vienna, is referred to by many authors in terms of the Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy. To Frankl, 'logos' means meaning, and logotherapy means 'healing through meaning'.
Logotherapy is based on the three concepts. (1) the freedom of will, (2) the will to meaning, and (3) the meaning of life. The freedom of will involves the issue of determinism versus pan determinism, the will to meaning is explained as distinct from the concepts of the will to power and the will to pleasure as they are presented by Adlerian and Freudian psychology. Criticizing the will to pleasure (the pleasure principle) in the light of a broader concept, the homeostasis principle. Frankl elaborate on logotherapy's motivationsl theory. The meaning of life relates to the issue of relativism versus subjectivism.
The therapeutic applications of logotherapy are also threefold. First of all, logotherapy is applicable as a treatment of noogenic neurosis; second, logotherapy is a treatment of conventional psycho-genic neuroses; and third, logotherapy is a treatment of somatogenic diseases in general. Today, however, ever more patients complain of sense of meaninglessness or emptiness which Frankl has termed existential frustration. Existential frustration need not but may well result on neurosis in which case Frankl speaks of a 'noogenic neurosis' in contrast to the conventional one. According to empirical studies in various countries, about 20percent of the cases of neurosis accuring in clinics are noogenic. In such cases, logotherapy is the method of choice. Drawing upon his many years of professional practice and the concentration-camp experiences that helped shape his view, Frankl developed such invaluable therapeutic techniques as paradoxical intention and dereflection in addition to traditional therapy.
In an age such as ours, in which traditions are on the wane, counseling and psychotherapy must see its principal assignment in equipping man with the ability to find meaning. The search for meaning is a never-ending process to make sense of life, in spite of apparent chaos and unavoidable suffering. To help people in this search has always been the goal of religion. Logotherapy, as a branch of psychotherapy, extends its help to everybody, religious or not, because the search for meaning is a prerequisite for health. In this respect, we come to a concluding remark that logotherapy speaks to the needs of the hour.
