대종교 시교 방향 수립을 위한 나눔 이론과 교육 검토 = Review of Philanthropy Theory and Education for Establishing the Direction of Daejonggyo’s Missionary Work

Daejonggyo, which has “Devotion to the wel-fare of mankind” as its doctrine, has recently seen a significant decline in its religious influence, as opposed to its past influence on society, such as its brilliant independence movement and the establishment of the National foundation Day of Korea as a national holiday. Although it has an external social work department, it has not been in operation for a long time due to the lack of a religious strategy, and its internal education program has also been discontinued.
In the 1980s and 1990s, the sharing culture in America was introduced to Korea by Catholics and Protestants and spread thereafter. Several social organizations were established to spread the sharing culture, and considerable results were achieved despite its short history. In the process of spreading the sharing culture, ‘philanthropy education’ inevitably emerged to guide the practice of sharing.
Through a review of sharing theories in the East and the West, the author defined sharing as “altruistic behaviors such as donations and volunteer work as a tool for implementing “Devotion to the wel-fare of mankind” (philanthropy). philanthropy education lies in teaching the value, meaning, and practice of sharing. In order for the theory of philanthropy education to take root healthily in our society, it was believed that it could be deepened when we actively accept “Devotion to the wel-fare of mankind” as the founding ideology and educational ideology.
However, since “Devotion to the wel-fare of mankind” in terms of its concept and practice was somewhat abstract, it was not studied in depth or specified within Daejonggyo, and it was not able to lead the culture of sharing. Although it was late, it was thought that a basic investigation was needed to closely examine the existing sharing and philanthropy education so that it could contribute to social responsibility beyond personal faith or ups and downs. However, it would be better to maintain the ‘4 essential concepts of philanthropy education’ proposed by the prominent American sociologist Patricia O. Bjorhovde as the basic framework for the content of philanthropy education, even if it incorporated national elements.
This paper analyzed the research results on philanthropy education in social welfare and proposed a education program plan for “Devotion to the wel-fare of mankind” that integrates it with the theory of “Devotion to the wel-fare of mankind”. It is hoped that this paper will be a reference for establishing the future direction of Daejonggyo and developing textbooks for JongriDaehak (Daejonggyo’s doctrinal lectures).
