한국과 미국 사범대학 학과구성의 특징 비교 = A Comparison Study in the Characteristics of Departmental Organizations between the College of Education in Korea and USA

This study was to compare characteristics of departmental organizations between the college of education (COE) in Korea and in the USA. The COEs were selected from the two countries. The universities are: Seoul National University, Pusan National University, Chonbuk National University, and Kongju National University in Korea, along with the University of Missouri, University of Texas, University of Georgia, and Florida State University in the USA. Characteristics of various departments such as the number of departments, students, and faculty members were set as comparison criteria between the two countries. Data was collected from the homepage and brochures of the individual universities, along with correspondence through emails. Results from this study are as follows. Firstly, while the department names of various COEs in the USA are investigated, most CUEs in Korea have standardized names. Secondly, while CUEs in the USA provide a variety of departments and majors for the pre-service teacher education for instructional settings, COEs in Korea conduct only the pre-service teachers` education for secondary schools. Thirdly, while COEs in the USA are composed of pedagogy-based departments and their related major programs, those of Korea are composed of subject areas in the secondary schools. Fourthly, while the departments of COEs in the USA are established according to student development and their educational goals, those COEs in Korea are consistent with the subject areas of secondary education. Finally, while GOEs in the USA have separate educational programs for middle and high school pre-service teachers, those in Korea do not have those separated programs. Based on the results of this study, an example of hypothetical departmental organizations for the future Korean college of education is presented.
