This study focused on the existence of and relationship between Oneuli and Oneuli in Woncheon Gang Bonpuri, which is centered on Park Bong-chunbon but set in the mythical space of Woncheon Gang Bonpuri. The study found that spatial movement has major meaning in Oneuli‘s journey to find parents. This study adopted Claude Levi-Strauss’s confrontation structure analysis method to reflect the specificity and universality of Korean mythology. The research analyzed this myth’s spatial structure by changing the confrontation structure analysis framework of Lévi-Strauss’s Oedipus myth. Additionally, this study focused on the mythical pixel along with the spatial structure, synthesizing the structural characteristics and meaning of the mythical space to investigate the mythical meaning of Woncheongang Bonpuri.
The nature of the space in Woncheongang Bonpuri and the “character of scarcity” they go through occupy a very important point in this myth. This myth’s defining feature is not the clear confrontation between the characters and the world but rather that each creature is identifiable through their problems. Through the sum of different beings’ problems, we can see that the world is aiming for balance amidst imbalance, and Oneuli’s spatial movement is important because it is revealed through Oneuli’s existence and relationship. Oneuli’s trip is a process of discovering that the answer is within us and close to us, including answers to the questions facing snakes, lotus trees, the Jade Emperor, Maeil, and Jangsang.
This study assessed that when Oneuli asks what he discovered in the Woncheon River, Oneuli experiences both this and that, and it is found that here and there are “not different.” This reveals the worldview of Korean mythology, along with the behavioral meaning, confirming that “this side and that side,” the “real and sacred dimension,” and “sky and Earth” do not differ from one another. Oneuli crosses the sea in search of the Woncheon River, but there is no answer there. The space thought of as heaven is no different from Earth, representing the dynamic relationship between heaven and Earth and referring to the paradox of heaven and Earth. Oneuli’s “integration” is achieved through spatial movement and the four seasons seen in the Woncheon River, and finally, knowing the reason for this world and gaining enlightenment comprise Oneuli’s “integration” method.
In Woncheongang Bonpuri, the principle of harmony and change in this world is centered on boundaries and mediating spaces, and “from the afterlife to the afterlife” and “from the afterlife” are key. Oneuli identifies exploration and movement → the situation of isolation and disconnection, and finally, the answer to enlightenment in the Woncheon River and moves back toward Earth. Enlightenment is connected to and expanded by the beings that Oneuli encounters in the process of regression. Therefore, the core of this myth lies in Oneuli’s “discovery and integration” in the spatial structure of this world and the underworld. This proceeds in the following order: disconnect (overstagnation) → connection → improvement → discovery → integration. Such spatial structures in each space are connected, leading to expansion and converging to produce one result. In other words, it can be seen that the place where Oneuli crosses the water is nothing but a place symbolizing another Earth, not the sky. This realization shows the paradox of gaining eternity in heaven. The summer and winter seasons seen from the Woncheon River are important, and pain and happiness coexist. Further, the equal existence of the “four seasons” of “spring, summer, fall, and winter” shows the space of a “monolithic cycle.” Through Oneuli and spatial movement, we discover the properties of Earth in the heavens and the properties of Earth on Earth in order to gain enlightenment, and this realization is “monistic integ...
