더보기‘-goseoneun’ originates from the combination of the sequential marker ‘-goseo’ with the delimiter ‘neun’, evolving into a conditional ending. The overall conditional meaning of the construction varies depending on the content of the preceding and following clauses. It demonstrates variations in the degree to which adjectives are accepted as predicates in the preceding clause and in the possibility of expressing conditional relationships between propositions regardless of temporal relations. In this paper, we first differentiate conditional clauses using ‘-goseoneun’ based on whether the preceding clause is negative or affirmative. We then examine the conditional meanings that emerge in each case, establishing a total of five subtypes. Type 1 appears in the format of [{negation of a necessary condition}-goseoneun {negation of a proposition/impossibility/negative outcome}], serving to emphasize the indispensability of the necessary condition. It allows for adjectives to be used as predicates in the preceding clause and enables the expression of conditional relationships between propositions, regardless of temporal relations, thus demonstrating aspects of a conditional clause. Type 2 is presented in the format of [{negation of an exception condition}-goseoneun {a generally applicable situation}], functioning to specify an exception condition while indicating the generality of the situation in the following clause. In this case, too, adjectives can be used as predicates in the preceding clause, and it is possible to express conditional relationships between propositions regardless of temporal relations, thereby displaying aspects of a conditional clause. In contrast, types 3 to 5, which either function to present sufficient conditions leading to the results in the following clause or emphasize the indispensability of necessary conditions while the preceding clause appears in an affirmative form, show that it is awkward for adjectives to serve as predicates in the preceding clause. Additionally, it is impossible to express conditional relationships between propositions regardless of temporal relations. This indicates a lower degree of independence from the sequential meaning of the original ‘-goseo,’ suggesting a closer adherence to its original sequential implication. Finally, the reason why Type 1 has a high degree of independence in terms of conditional meaning is due to the fact that both the preceding and following clauses often appear in negative form, making it difficult to interpret them in terms of sequential time relations. Additionally, it was discussed that Type 2 exhibits many characteristics of a conditional clause because the origin of ‘-goseo’ in Type 2 is associated with representing logical sequence rather than temporal sequence.
