The present study explored teachers’ construction of practical knowledge. Employing a narrative research method, this research conducted an in-depth study on the ways in which teachers constructed their practical knowledge. Several research questions framed this study. First, how do teachers construct and develop their practical knowledge Second, are there differences in teachers’ construction of practical knowledge between novice and expert teachers and between elementary and secondary teachers Finally, what are the implications of teachers’ construction of practical knowledge on professional development Investigating these questions, the present study sought to gain a deeper understanding of teachers’ practical knowledge and offer ways to promote professional development.
The participants were selected from two teacher communities considering the years of teaching experience and school level. A total of 20 teachers were participated in this study. By studying the teachers who participated in teacher community, this study intended to investigate teachers’ construction of practical knowledge not only in the individual level, but also community level.
The findings of this study showed that teachers constructed their practical knowledge through practice and reflection. For the first couple of years teachers constructed their practical knowledge through trial-and-error. Then they became interested in the knowledge underneath their practice. They criticized the knowledge beneath their practice and reconstructed the knowledge. Then they put the reconstructed knowledge into practice and tested its validity and usefulness. The knowledge proved to be valid and useful through practice became their practical knowledge. In so doing, teachers not only reconstructed their practical knowledge, but also improved their practice. In short, the way in which teachers constructed and developed their practical knowledge can be characterized as inquiry process involving practice and reflection, rather than application of theoretical knowledge to practice.
While teachers’ practice and reflection explained their construction of practical knowledge on the individual level, teachers’ knowledge construction on the community level exhibited the collaborative character. The construction of practical knowledge on the community level could be characterized as follow. First, teachers shared their practice and engaged in collective reflection on their practice. Through collective reflection, teachers constructed collective practical knowledge. Second, teachers put the collective practical knowledge into practice. In so doing, teachers tested the validity and usefulness of collective practical knowledge. Finally, teachers engaged in collective reflection on the practice of the collective knowledge and reconstructed their collective practical knowledge. Through this collaborative reflection on practice, teacher community constructed and developed collective practical knowledge.
The collaborative construction of practical knowledge on the community level enabled teachers to overcome the limitation of knowledge construction on the individual level. Teachers became concerned not only their own professional development, but also their colleagues’ professional development and engaged in collaborative learning.
The findings of this study offer several suggestions for professional development. The traditional approach to professional development which focused on the delivery of knowledge from outside experts to teachers needs to be changed. In order for professional development to be effective, various ways of promoting teachers’ collaborative construction of practical knowledge needs to be developed.
