Historical geography once was regarded as a fundamental subdiscipline together wits geomorphology. Hence this "historical approach" was the focus in geographical education. But discourses on the future and on the end of history began, many questioned the value of historical insight. This study's aim was to investigate the concept of time (and space) in different emthodology in historical geography, and its implicaion to geography in education.
During the period of quantification revolution hsitorical geography has remined in relative isolation although there were a few exceptions. But since late 1960s, historical geography sought its new directions in a theoretically informed discipline. Especially, various discourses on social theory in historical geography has developed since the mid 1970s in England Schools. This study aims at identifying the concept of space/time in each approaches and then examining the meaning of "history" in historical geography in various methodological stance.
Classical historical geography assumed absolute space and time, hence history regarded as the past. Kant's concept of space and time was the base of geographical inquiry, and the lineary successions of "past → presnet → future" was taken for granted. Hence the meaning of history was interpreted not as human history but as past in a physical sense. This concept of history as past assumed that the observer's positon was outside time. Hence, the notion of syncronic/diachronic method and the cross-section method in historical geography were possible.
With quantification, relative concept of space and behavioral environment by Kirk was applied in historical geography. But most historical geographers remained to their classical traditions. As the humanistic geography approch emerged, historical geographers attacked positivist trends on the basis of philosophical reflection. Especially, idealist concept of history by Collingwood was applied to historical geography by some scholars. Humanistic geographers prefer the concept of place to space. The sense of place and lifeworld is a sort of relative concept of space in some sense.
The positivist (and behavioralist) accepted the relative concept of space, but they assumed absolute time. Relative time was accepted by humanist. The notion of relative time was emphasised the psychic time, and time was regarded as flow of consciousness. French philosopher Bergson developed this concept of time, and from his viewpoint time was regarded as memory. The phenomenologist hold the similiar concept. Along this line Collingwood regarded history as a sort of memory, and historical geographers study the alndscape as memory. This concept of history assumed the observer's position was inside time.
Now, we turn the recent trends in historical geography. Since the mid-1970s there were the debate around the social relavance and some historical geographers used social theory as their method. The time geography and structuration theory of Giddens has promoted the new regional geography, and the life history approch to historical geography. Relational concepts of space and time have been introduced, Marx inspired the student developed geography of capitalism and class struggle. Recently posmodernism has changed geographical enterprise. This resulted in historical geography of modernity. They claimed the "history of present" and geneological method, this view has some implication to geography in education for future.
