바하연구 = A Study on Bach - His Zweistimmigen Inventionen and Passion -

All the artistic and ideological greatness which one can hardly find in any other musician is concentrated in Bach. Therefore, it is surely dangerous to try to grasp his art by bit. In this paper, which consists of part of a planned study of Bach, the author confines the discussion to the fundamental and important problems by presenting away of approaching his art and ideas.
The first problem to be dealt with is his life and art. In a discussion of this problem, it may be considered ordinary to look into the development of his innate talent. However, the author thought it reasonable to trace his childhood growth in the musical atmosphere of his home and to study his religious convictions. His artistic development was inextricably connected with his deep religious faith. Deeply attached to Pietismus, he overcame the religious controversies of his time and sublimated his faith in music.
Bach's piano works are brilliant and marvelous achievements which can be ranked with only Mozart's and Beethoven's in the history of musical composition. His "Zweistimmige Inventionen", especially, is not only a timeless fundamental textbook both in its form and method for understanding Bach's instrumental music, but an authoritative guide for musicians and composers. Therefore, it would be a great mistake to regard it merely as a textbook for teaching music only.
The tragic element in Bach's "passion" is invaluable. The work transcends the boundary of musical art so the author tried to explicate the tragic sense in "Passion" by applying Nietzsche's tragic theory to it. However, it is true that the essence of "Passion" lies in its genuine musical elements. There can be found only the deepening of emotion and we find that Bach's concern was to grasp music as religion in " Passion".
