In recent centuries, extensive ecological changes resulting from human activities have posed a serious threat to global biodiversity. Particularly, the importance of green spaces for biodiversity in urban ecosystems has been continually emphasized as cities advance. Understanding the patterns of ecosystem changes is essential for recognizing and managing biodiversity threats. Biodiversity assessment in urban ecosystems should consider not only the types and numbers of species but also factors such as the quantity and quality of ecosystem services and ecological functions.
This study aims to comprehensively assess green spaces in urban ecosystems and propose efficient monitoring and management strategies. The research focuses on various types of green spaces, such as urban ecological restoration sites, small-scale ecological patches, and ecological parks. Spatial and habitat analyses based on data and biological analyses were conducted to monitor urban ecosystems in terms of ecosystem diversity and species diversity. Appropriate indicators were selected for each stage and scale. The study proposes an integrated approach to evaluating the ecological characteristics of urban ecosystems, suggesting management strategies based on the evaluation results.
The research is divided into two main parts. Firstly, a data-based evaluation was performed. A restoration diagnostic assessment framework for damaged areas and ecological restoration sites within the urban ecosystem was constructed and applied to assess restoration outcomes. Based on a literature review, 3 categories, 10 indicators, and 13 sub-indicators were proposed. A quantitative evaluation of restoration outcomes was conducted for five restoration sites, revealing a 45% increase in habitat quality and a 37% increase in ecological connectivity for two medium-scale restoration sites. For three small-scale restoration sites, habitat quality increased by 12%, and ecological connectivity increased by 19%. This indicates that improving land cover and land use can enhance habitat quality and ecological connectivity in damaged areas over a short period.
Secondly, to evaluate small-scale ecological patches, ecological design indicators and land use data were utilized. Thirty urban parks in Seoul were analyzed for ecological design indicators and ecological characteristics based on their location. Classified into ‘Adjacent to mountain’ (parks adjacent to mountains, natural terrain parks) and ‘Isolate in Urban area’ (parks located within 300m without forests, independently positioned parks). The parks isolated in urban area scored an average of 16.86 (±6.84), while parks adjacent to mountain scored 35.94 (±11.05), showing a significant difference. Land cover-based habitat quality (HQ) values also demonstrated a significant difference, with parks isolated in urban area having an average score of 0.33 (±0.07) and parks adjacent to mountain having 0.53 (±0.13). This indicates that the basic ecological potential of parks differs according to their location. However, even in parks isolated in urban area, ecological design indicators led to high scores for habitat quality and ecological assessment. This suggests that maintaining high ecological patches requires planning based on location but also emphasizes the importance of applying ecological design indicators for management purposes.
The results of the data-based ecological and habitat evaluation provide an overall assessment of small to medium patches biodiversity and propose management strategies. However, challenges arose during the evaluation process due to insufficient data on urban species. Efficient solutions for biodiversity monitoring are required, particularly for small-scale ecological patches in urban ecosystems. Urban ecosystems are highly influenced by human activities, resulting in high fragmentation of green spaces, leading to varying ecological characteristics in different areas. Monitoring of micro-habitats is crucial as the occurrence of invasive species and target species varies across spaces. Especially, mammals and bird species are essential as major target and core species within Seoul. Monitoring their occurrence is a crucial indicator for evaluating urban green space biodiversity.
Therefore as a second research topic, this study conducted monitoring of mammals and bird species using environmental DNA(eDNA) in urban ecological parks within the urban ecosystem. Environmental DNA, found in water, soil, air, etc., contains unique genetic material for each species, allowing the detection of rare or challenging-to-survey species. In this study, eDNA was utilized to monitor the diversity of animal species acting as habitats in Gil-dong Ecological Park over a year, with five repeated samplings and analysis of 65 samples. 79% of mammal species and 67% of dominant bird species were detected. To observe differences in micro-habitats, a comparative analysis of wetland and forest areas within the target site was performed, revealing higher occurrences and abundances of species in wetland areas.
Ultimately, the study proposes ways to utilize the results of data-based ecological and habitat comprehensive evaluation and eDNA-based biodiversity monitoring. The result can used to risk evaluation of ecosystems (Red List of Ecosystem, RLE) and global ecosystem typology (GET) suggested by the IUCN . The integration of the results of data-based ecosystem evaluation, spatial evaluation, and eDNA-based species monitoring is expected to be highly useful as foundational data for evaluating the conservation value of urban ecosystems in the future.
