The purpose of this study is to introduce the various aspects of the culture of lending-book that took place in the United States during the 18th~19th centuries. It is the first time I introduce the American culture of lending-book in Korea. It is a supplementary material for the understanding of the Choseon`s culture of lending-book in the 18th~19th century based on the case of the United States, which has a wealth of cultural history of lending-book. In the United States, the first circulating library began in the mid 18th century, in 1762 by William Lind in Annapolis. After that, business of circulating library was rapidly growing around the big cities after the war of independence and reached its peak in the first half of the nineteenth century. However, since the middle of the 19th century, there has been a gradual decline due to the emergence of alternative reading media such as newspapers and changes in readers` preferences. For over 150 years, the culture of lending-book blossomed. In the process, the influences of the British culture of lending-book were not negligible. However, the culture of the lending-book created by the immigrant settlers showed both universality and peculiarity. The following are the reasons for the development and decline of US culture of lending-book. First, the optimistic consciousness of the economy has made a great contribution to the formation of the culture of lending-book. In other words, it is important that knowledge and books are perceived as commodities, consumed by money, and bought and sold. Commerciality(consumption) and amusement(recreational use) have led to the culture of lending-book. In the United States, it is confirmed that the company promoted aggressive promotional strategies such as newspaper advertisement and catalog production. Second, for the development of lending-book business, it was necessary to have a large-scale economic population capable of reading demand and supply. Third, the location of circulating library in the metropolitan area was an important factor for sales. Fourth, generally circulating libraries were leased to regular reading members. But even irregular member of readers can freely borrow six pence per week. This low cost made it possible to read books borrowed. Fifth, the leading role of the development of lending-book culture was female readers. Therefore, circulating library has developed various service strategies for female readers. Sixth, the most popular books at circulating library were novels and literary books. Seventh, the increase of the letter reading rate promoted the development of lending-book culture. Eighth, the operation of a multi-purpose business such as cooperating of a coffee shop and circulating library, or common using of a music listening room and circulating library, also contributed to the development of the lending-book culture. In Korea, the novel reading of professional reader(called by `Jeongisu`) was like a kind of `oral story rental` that `rented reading` by lending the act of reciting. However, since the middle of the 19th century, newspapers have gained a variety of information and entertainment readings, and as the public library has become available for free reading, book rental business has gradually declined. In a history of reading book, such culture of lending-book has the following meaning. First, it led to the growth of middle class readers who could read books and the advent of the novel era. Second, it means that the book has been changed from readings that have remained in self-cultivation activities or self-sufficient personality to reading that presupposes interaction with other people(or society) and communication. Third, it led to a change in reading value. That is, culture of circulating library was aiming for a reading that satisfies entertainingness and information(culture and enlightenment) as well as literacy value at the same time. Fourth, it demonstrated the possibility of fusion reading culture with other areas by pursuing reading activities combined with music and coffee etc. In this way, the study of American lending-book`s culture can become a channel for the understanding of European lending-book`s culture, and it can be the basis of the understanding of the world lending-book`s culture. In particular, when you want to understand the domestic currencies that lacks the relevant data about lending-book and circulating library, the wealth of those materials in America can be a good supplement.
